Courier Sports Report

SANDESTIN, Fla. - Cannon County capped an outstanding week of basketball with a convincing 68-26 thrashing of White Plains (Ala.) in the championship game of the Sandestin Beach Basketball Classic Thursday.

After answering stiff challenges against teams with a combined 27-1 record in the first two games of the Classic, the Lionettes roared to a rather easy win in the title game. Cannon County won its ninth straight and improved to 15-1.

Emily Sissom, who netted nine points in the finals, was named Classic MVP. Her 21 points against Ponce De Leon in the semifinals were critical to reaching the title game. Taylor King, an All-Classic selection, and Abbey Sissom led Cannon County with 16 points each.

"When you are away from home for the holidays like we have it makes it good when you can bring something home to the Town of Woodbury and Cannon County," Lionettes Head Coach Michael Dodgen said. "I'm proud of the team. We came in here with the mindset of winning this tournament and doing what we needed to do. The way the bracket set up we knew the first two games could be the toughest."

Getting into the championship game was no easy task but Cannon County answered all challenges and continued its surge into the second half of the season. The Lionettes return to action when they play host to Warren County at Harris Gymnasium Tuesday at 6 p.m.
