Cannon County Board of Education approved a calendar change moving the date for ACT tests from March 4 to March 18.

The ACT is a standardized test required for entrance to most colleges in the U.S.

The date change was proposed due to a conflict with the state BETA Club convention, explained Marcia Melton, Supervisor of Instruction for the Cannon County School District.

"We considered a state-wide date, but it can be moved to March 18," Melton said.

The 18th is the Tuesday before Cannon County Schools' spring break and will be a day off for most students except for 11th graders who will be taking the exam, she said. The system will also be moving parent/teacher conferences to that day.

Board member Bruce Daniel moved for acceptance of Melton's suggestion and that passed the Board of Education unanimously.

Director of Schools Barbara Parker reported on repairs to the roof at Cannon County High School's field house. The roof has been completed, she said.

However, Parker is awaiting action on light poles at the county's baseball field.

"I haven't had any final reports on that yet," she told board members. The issue first arose when one of the light poles at the Cannon County Fair-grounds fell last Hall-oween. At that point, County Executive Mike Gannon determined that all of the light poles should be checked at the park in addition to light poles at Cannon County High School. Middle Tennessee Electric agreed to check the poles in addition to the electrical connections.

A report could be made at the County Comm-ission's upcoming meeting on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. in the Courthouse.

Board member Nathan Sanders moved to change the Board of Education's meeting times to 6:30 p.m. instead of 6. Board chairman Randy Gannon moved for acceptance and the measure was passed by acclamation.
