Tidbits of recent news from around Woodbury and Cannon County ...

• There will be a meeting next week at the Central Office to discuss various options for incorporating a middle school into the Cannon County School System. The date is Nov. 30 and the time 3:30 p.m.

• The Woodbury Planning Commission heard recently from a gentleman, Adolpho Gomez, who is looking into opening a "meat and three" restaurant in town. Gomez is said to be looking at the building next to Farm Bureau Insurance on South McCrary Street as the location. The menu would include a mixture of country and Cuban cuisine.

• Woodbury Mayor Harold Patrick says he is looking into the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of adding more parking spaces along North Tatum St. This would be accomplished by changing horizontal lanes to diagonal ones. Horizontal lanes were placed during the courthouse revitalization project, when the street was re-paved. A change back to diagonal lanes would add six more parking spaces, Patrick said.

• Hometown Flowers and Gifts has moved to a new location. The business was located next to NAPA. It's new location is in the building formerly occupied by McFerrin Printing at 119 N. Cannon St.

• Many readers may be aware that Lions Pizza Den on N. Cannon St. is under new ownership. In addition, they have also spruced up the outside of their building with a new paint job, adding a little more color to downtown Woodbury.

• Joe's Place is planning a special holiday dinner Thursday. Hours are from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. A traditional Thanksgiving meal is planned. Joe's Place was recently voted the No. 1 Restaurant in Cannon County during a newspaper poll.

• A new furniture store is reportedly preparing to open downtown, a few doors east of Jennings Jewelers. The store will reportedly offer consignment and homemade furniture.

• Things aren't as busy at the Cannon County Election Office these days as they have been the last 10 months, but that situation will change after the first of the year, according to Administrator of Elections Stan Dobson. That's when work will begin on redistricting, following the release of the 2010 Census figures. Population numbers have increased in some of the county's districts, and decreased in others, which means some lines will have to be redrawn, Dobson said.

• New Cannon County Sheriff Darrell Young mentioned recently that he is exploring the possibility of adding a K-9 unit to the department.

• There are some big events coming up in Cannon County in the coming days. First there is the Mitch Wilson State Farm Classic this Friday and Saturday at Cannon County High School. Also on Saturday, there will be a Christmas Tree Lighting at the Gassway Fire Hall at 5 p.m.

• State representatives Mark Pody and Mae Beavers will be in town for a Meet & Greet at the Lions Club Building on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m.

• The 2nd Annual Santa’s Workshop will be held Friday, December 3 from 4:00 until 8:00. The Workshop is being sponsored by and held at Curves and Legendary Cuts. Children pay $10.00 and pose for a picture with Santa, receive a goody bag, and shop for two presents. All proceeds go to Cannon County S.A.V.E. • This year's Lions Club Christmas Tour of Homes has a record nine locations scheduled to receive visitors on Saturday evening, December 4, between 4 and 8 p.m. This annual event is a major fundraising project of the Lions Club. Tickets for the privilege of visitng any or all the locations are $5 and may be picked up at the Lions Memorial Building prior to starting the tour, or from Lions Club members or at Jennings Jewelers. A map and instructions may be picked up at the Lions Memorial building before starting the tour.

Also on Saturday, Dec. 4, the Lions Club will hold its annual Christmas Parade.
