Cannon falls to strong DeKalb

SMITHVILLE - There was reason for Cannon County faithful to be optimistic as the Lions trailed rival DeKalb County 13-0 at the half and had played well in the opening 24 minutes.

The same optimism could remain despite a 39-0 setback against the District 8-AA rival in Smithville Friday night. The game got away from the Lions in the second half as DeKalb County (3-1, 2-0) wore Cannon County down and then used its speed to get to the outside and create havoc.

Despite the setback, Cannon County continued to show improvement. The Lions (1-3, 0-1) displayed their best play of the season in the first half when it stayed with the Tigers.

The strong DeKalb defense contained Cannon County, limiting it to less than 100 yards total offense.

The Lions trailed 13-0 with 10:36 remaining in the first half and had several chances to get on the board; however, penalties and failed execution halted drives.

Cannon County has played three of its first four away from home but the Lions will see the schedule turn in their favor with four of the final six contests at Schwartz Field.

The Lions play host to Watertown Friday. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
