The Cannon County School District has been awarded the Read to be Ready Summer Camp grant for the third year in a row from the Tennessee Department of Education.

Statewide, 203 public schools received the grant, Tennessee Education Commissioner Dr. Candice McQueen said in a news release.

"As we have seen in the past two years, Read to be Ready summer programs help ensure that our rising first, second, and third graders who need it the most are getting additional literacy support throughout the summer months," McQueen said. "As last year's results showed, these camps play a critical role in increasing students' vocabulary, reading comprehension, and motivation."

The grant provides funding for a tuition free, 4 week long literacy focused summer camp for thirty student in need in Cannon County.

Emily Hughes and Kathy Mullins are the camp's co-directors with Dr. Marcia Melton overseeing. Stacie Bryson, Joy Pope, Beth Todd, and Maria Vickers will be the camp teachers.

The camp will run from June 4-28 at Woodbury Grammar. This year's camp theme is Engineering.

Students will receive transportation and both breakfast and lunch at the camp. They will also participate in theme-related field trips including weekly trips to Adams Memorial Library.

Students will be given a minimum of 18 books to expand their home library. Students selected to participate in the camp will be contacted by the district.

Read to be Ready is a coordinated campaign launched by Governor Bill Haslam, First Lady Crissy Haslam and Commissioner Candice McQueen in February 2016 with the goal to increase third grade reading proficiency in Tennessee to 75 percent by 2025 through a variety of initiatives.

The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the importance of reading, unite efforts to address low reading achievement, highlight best practices, and build partnerships.
