CELEBRATE EARTH DAY: Ferrell Hollow Farm Senior Horse and Cat Sanctuary in Readyville will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit the NEW Memorial Gardens and see the Senior Horses and Cats large and small! Music by Templeton Thompson from 12-2 p.m. Vegan Food and Unique Hand-Crafted Merchandise. Tickets are only $5 and each ticket makes you eligible to win over a dozen prizes including spa packages, movie tickets, and an original Dina D'Argo painting ($950 value) to name a few! CATFISH OR CHICKEN TENDERS SUPPER: Clearfork United Methodist Church at 1721 Big Hill Road in Gassaway in holding a Catfish or Chicken Tenders Supper on April 7 from 3 to 7 p.m. Meal comes with choice of pinto, white or green beans, hush puppies, cabbage slaw or veggie salad, french fries, homemade desert and drink. RUN OF THE TIGERS: East Side School has announced the first annual Run of the Tigers Fun Run/5K. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 14 rain or shine at 8 a.m. with registration to begin at 7 a.m. at East Side School, 5658 McMinnville Hwy. The run comes with a little twist on the usual run in that participants are asked to dress like a tiger as in tiger ears, tail, stripes, costume etc. If a participant is affiliated with another Cannon County school then they are asked to dress up as their school mascot All runners and walkers who use a specified form to pre-register will receive and event t-shirt. If registering the day of the event, please arrive by 7 a.m. Pre-registered participants should arrive no later than 7:15 a.m. All proceeds from this event will support our outdoor classroom/pavillion project. The school has submitted a $5,000 grant to the Lowe's Toobox for Education Foundation which should cover about half of the cost of the project. If awarded the grant, it is hoped to have all additional funds raised by May in order to break ground in early June. CELEBRATION OF CRAFT: The 20th Annual Celebration of Craft will be held Saturday, April 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Tennessee Tech University's Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee. This free, family-friendly event gives the community an opportunity to immerse themselves in art at the Craft Center. Go behind the scenes and watch live studio demonstrations, chat with current students and alumni and meet our faculty, staff and artists in residence. Kids can choose from a number of hands-on crafts in which to participate and get a taste of what students learn while enrolled at the Craft Center. Activities include folding and dyeing paper, paper making, tempera enameling, stained "glass" lantern making, and tie-dyeing T-shirts. QUARTERING MEETING: PARQ (Preserve our Area's Rural Qualities) has scheduled the quarterly meeting for Wednesday April 18, 2018 at 7:00 P.M. PULL-A-PLANE: Hearts Take Flight is an event that pits teams of five people in a tug-of-war against a King Air 350 plane. The event will begin at 9 a.m.on Saturday, April 14, at Hollingshead Aviation on the campus of the Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport and will conclude when every team has pulled the plane. Proceeds will benefit The Arc Tennessee. Sponsorships and team donations are available for this fun, family-friendly event. Youth activities, entertainment, concessions, exhibitors and more will be featured for the event, which is free and open to the public. ESCAPE MURFREESBORO 2018 will be presented April 29 from 2 to 5 p.m. After purchasing tickets online at www.escapemurfreesboro.com, teams will register at Locked Murfreesboro and receive clues to solve a series of puzzles and perform physical tasks. Throughout the event, players will be challenged to find 12 fictional FBI agents around the city to win the grand prize! BULLER AND LEE TO PERFORM: Becky Buller and Nate Lee will perform at Bird Song Studio on Saturday, May 19. In 2016, Becky Buller made bluegrass music history by becoming the first person ever to win in both instrumental and vocal categories at the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards. In 2017, Becky and her bluegrass band recorded a video for her new single, "Speakin' To That Mountain," right here at Bird Song Studio. Nate Lee will accompany Becky on May 19th at Bird Song Studio. Nate is an IBMA award-winning instrumentalist and renowned teacher of private lessons and music camps. While attending the Bluegrass & Country Music Program at South Plains College, Nate joined the Alan Munde Gazette. He toured with the band for six years and played fiddle on their second release Made To Last. After moving to Nashville in 2012, Nate toured with Irene Kelley, Town Mountain and the Jim Hurst Trio. FOCUS ON FASHION: There is more to fashion than meets the red carpet. Youth in grades 8th-12th are invited to join us as we explore the fashion industry in Nashville, TN. The three day educational event conducted by UT Extension is scheduled for May 29-31st. It will be filled with interesting hands on workshops, fashion focused tours, shopping and fun with friends. HEALING FIELD: What has become Murfreesboro's iconic Memorial Day salute will return May 26-28. Continuing an ten-year tradition, the Noon Exchange Club of Murfreesboro will host an inspiring formation of U.S. flags in tribute to our veterans, our military, and our personal heroes Memorial Day weekend.
The Healing Field® Flags of Remembrance will again be held at 265 West Thompson Lane at the First United Methodist Church field. A grassy field posted with hundreds of U.S. flags presents an unforgettable panorama of red, white and blue that has earned the description "healing" as part of its name. The memorial will open at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 26 and close at 5 p.m. Monday, May 28. Flag sales, which can be dedicated to the memory of a living or deceased veteran, cancer survivor or anyone the buyer would like to recognize, will be made in advance of the event or on the last day after the closing ceremony. Proceeds benefit the youth, community service and Americanism projects of the Noon Exchange Club whose National Project is the Prevention of Child Abuse, including its local outreach through The Family Center. SUMMER TRIP: The West Side Travel Group will be touring sites in Washington D.C., New York City and Pennsylvania from June 3 - 8, 2018. The trip will consist of 5 nights and 6 days of sightseeing and fun. Included in the cost will be hotel fee, coach bus transportation, admission cost to attractions and meals. FIREWORKS COMING: The 4th of July Fireworks Celebration will be here soon. The Hilton Stone American Legion Post 279 has the mission of conducting the Fireworks Celebration Event for 2018. It will be another great event for our community and all of Cannon County. There will be live entertainment, plenty of good old down home music, food booths, and fun and games for the children, and of course GREAT FIREWORKS to top off a great day of fun for all. Be sure and put Wednesday, July 4, 2018 on your calendars. More info will be coming out on WBRY and in the Cannon Courier - so stay tuned. 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Only household waste will be accepted at the Convenience Center. There will no longer be any building materials accepted or cardboard pickup provided. Please make note of any changes.
