NATIONAL TRAILS DAY: Celebrate National Trails Day at Edgar Evins State Park this year with a new trail, new aviary and a party. We'll be cutting the ribbon on a new kid friendly approximately 1/2 mile hilly trail and unveiling the newly built aviary next to the Interpretive Center in Edgar Evins State Park on Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be guided and unguided hikes on the Story Book Trail, featuring the book, Where Butterflies Grow, by Joanne Ryder with pictures by Lynne Cherry. This project is endorsed by the Governor's Books From Birth Foundation, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, Ready to Read, Tennessee State Parks, and Friends of Tennessee State Parks Conservancy. Representatives will be on hand to sign up children from 1 to 5 to receive free books monthly from the Imagination Library but this trail will also be appealing to children through the fourth grade reading level. DIABETES PROGRAM: On June 6 the Cannon County Health Department will be offering a free Take Charge of Your Diabetes Program workshop. The 6-week program is designed for people with diabetes and caregivers to learn basic skills necessary to self-manage their diabetes and work effectively with health care professionals. Diabetes is complicated disease that can strike fear, confusion, and helplessness in diagnosed people and caregivers. People with diabetes must deal not only with their disease, but also with the impact this has on their lives and emotions. A self-management approach to diabetes education gives people the knowledge, tools, and confidence to take day-by-day responsibility of their diabetes care. The Take Charge of Your Diabetes Program is conducted by two leaders certified by Stanford University Diabetes Self-Management Program Master Trainers. Classes will be held every Wednesday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Cannon County Health Department. For more information, or to sign up for the program, please contact Wendy White at 615-563-4243. GASSAWAY HOMECOMING: The annual Gassaway Homecoming is set for Saturday, June 2. Ham Breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m. Entertainment all day. Parade at 1 p.m. Giveaways during the day. Fish Supper from 4 to 7 p.m. For more information contact Karen Ashford at 615-563-4183. 60TH REUNION: The 1958 Woodbury Central High School 60th Class Reunion will be held Saturday, June 2 at the Cannon County Senior Center at 609 Lehman St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. FOLKFEST: International Folkfest delegations arrive from Italy, Mexico, and Sweden on June 10 for a full week of performing, touring, and cultural interaction in the mid-state area. Evening concerts are held at Wilson County's Winfree Bryant Middle School on Friday night and at the Bell Buckle Banquet Hall on Saturday night. DECORATION DAY: The annual Decoration Day for Banks Cemetery in DeKalb County will be Sunday, June 3. Banks Cumberland Presbyterian Church will also have their annual Homecoming Day. Classes will be held at Cannon County Chiropractic and will be on a 6 month cycle. The classes will be in 3 sets of two classes in case you will not be able to come to the fist class offered. The class is open to the public at no cost and no obligation. Some of the topics to be covered are nutrition, exercise, positioning, new baby and postpartum. CAMP TIME: Tennessee 4-H Camps, which are accredited by the American Camp Association, are directed by caring professionals and volunteers, which include on-site camp staff and county 4-H agents. These adults have worked hard to design a program that is educational, inclusive, rewarding and fun. The Hilton Stone American Legion Post 279 has the mission of conducting the Fireworks Celebration Event for 2018. It will be another great event for our community and all of Cannon County. There will be live entertainment, plenty of good old down home music, food booths, and fun and games for the children, and of course GREAT FIREWORKS to top off a great day of fun for all. The 16th annual Southern Girls Rock Camp is accepting applications for both volunteer instructors and campers to attend the July 24-28 day camp at MTSU for girls and nonconforming youth ages 10 to 17. Managed by the Murfreesboro-based nonprofit group Youth Empowerment through Arts and Humanities, the camp's mission is to create a positive, self-affirming place for girls to express and empower themselves through music and associated creative activities. Jess Hawthorne, YEAH's outreach director, said the camp's traditional association with MTSU is one of its strongest drawing points, helping to attract both volunteers and campers over the years. The usual workshops in guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion and voice will be part of the 2018 camp, but other newer offerings include a ukulele workshop and a workshop at which campers can build their own working guitar pedals.
