A year after Cannon County students returned the best results in the program's history, the Adams Memorial Library seeks to build on this momentum as the Fifth Annual Battle of the Books kicks off Monday, October 29, and will end on November 29.

The library will once again be challenging the elementary schools to read a county wide total of 5,000 books. Last year, Cannon County students met and surpassed this goal by reading a total of 5,752 books. The library also hopes that the long range goal of 20,000 total books read, that was set when the program was launched in 2014, will be met this year.

Collectively, Cannon County students have read 15,065 books throughout the history of this program. The Battle of the Books is a friendly competition between the county's six elementary schools to see which school can read the most books. The library uses a mathematic formula to make sure that each school is treated fairly and has an equal chance of winning. The Champion and Runner-Up schools receive trophies, and the library awards pizza parties to the classroom in the winning school that read the most books. Additionally, this year the library will be throwing a pizza party for one class in each of the six schools who read the most books for their school!

Last year, the library introduced the awards Best Participation for the school that has the most classes participate, and Most Improved for the school that shows significant growth from their results from the previous year. Our former Champions, Runner-Ups and other award winners from 2014 to 2017 are:

2014: Champion - West Side
Runner-Up - Short Mountain

2015: Champion - West Side
Runner-Up - Woodland

2016: Champion - Short Mountain
Runner-Up - East Side

2017: Champion - Woodland
Runner-Up - East Side

Most Improved 2017 - Woodbury Grammar
Best Participation 2017 - (tie) Woodland and East Side

We wish the best of luck to all of our students and we thank them, their teachers, and their librarians for all of their hard work in helping make this program such a success! Good luck!
