Allen Ray Portwood, a resident of Woodbury, TN, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2022, at the age of 79. Allen was born to Frank & Helen Portwood on November 5, 1942 in Liberty, MO, and lived in Missouri, Oklahoma and Miami, FL, before settling in Woodbury to be with his life-partner, Dotty Duggin.
Allen was preceded in death by his father, Frank, mother, Helen, sisters, Lorraine & Barb, brother, Tom, and Dotty. He is survived by his son, Jeff and his wife Donna, along with step-children Chrissy Vaughn and son-in-law, Jeremy, Celia and Cassie Bowman, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Allen was passionate about family and coaching youth sports, especially wrestling; he coached and mentored several state champions in both Oklahoma and Florida. His survival skills enabled him to live through the ravages of Hurricane Andrew while living in Miami, and his conviction to family helped him survive a quintuple bypass and prostate cancer later in life. He loved to talk with friends and eat - he could be relied upon to clean everyone's plate and take home leftovers. He was a die-hard fan and didn't miss a broadcast of an Atlanta Braves game.
A modest celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2022 from 10 AM to 12 PM at the First Baptist Church, 413 W. Main St., Woodbury. In lieu of flowers or other sympathies, please donate to the Cannon County Rescue Squad or Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Foundation.
