2018 Short Mountain Ecotone Tour a success

On May 5, 2018, 28 intrepid hikers ascended Short Mountain in Cannon County to examine the geological, ecological, archaeological and historical features that make this place so remarkable.

Led by representatives of the Tennessee Division of Natural Areas, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Tennessee Division of Forestry, Tennessee Division of Archaeology, Middle Tennessee State University, U.S. Geological Survey, Murfreesboro Stormwater Program, and local resident Neal Appelbaum, hikers were treated to a myriad of perspectives about the mountain and its local and regional significance.

Rains held off until late in the hike, allowing patrons to take in stops from the Headwaters WMA at the foot of the mountain all the way up to the Short Mountain State Natural Area and Short Mountain Bible Camp at its summit. The hike concluded with a great lunch at Short Mountain Distillery's Stillhouse Café.

The Division of Natural Areas appreciates the patronage of the assembled hikers, and is grateful to the leaders who donated so much of their time, energy and expertise to make for such a memorable expedition.

We are particularly thankful for the dedication of TWRA's Cannon County Wildlife Officer Mark Vance and Neal Appelbaum in making this event possible. We also appreciate the attendance of Cannon County native Jeffory Young, whose historical anecdotes were especially valued by hikers and leaders alike.

We look forward to the next visit to the mountain!
