The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security announced today it will offer additional opportunities for citizens in middle Tennessee to take the written non-commercial driver license knowledge test during the summer months to help reduce wait times at driver services centers.
Testing will be offered every Tuesday and the second Saturday of each month, beginning Tuesday, June 2 through Tuesday, August 25. This new "Summer Knowledge Testing Program" will be held at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology located at 100 White Bridge Road in Nashville.
This new testing program is aimed at individuals who are required to take the written knowledge test, specifically, high school students; individuals who have never possessed a driver license; or individuals who lost their driving privileges and are now eligible for reinstatement services.
The test will be administered by driver license examiners every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The department will administer the written knowledge examinations every hour and accept the first 50 applicants to register during each time period. Citizens may register and reserve a time slot at www.tn.gov/safety.
"The Summer Knowledge Testing Program is another initiative to improve efficiency at the state's driver services centers," Commissioner Bill Gibbons said. "This program will provide citizens with another location to take the written knowledge test rather than visiting a driver service center. We hope the creation of this program will reduce customers' wait times and help better service all customers in Davidson County and surrounding areas," he added.
The department will have two mobile units on-site to issue interim learner permits to those who successfully pass the written knowledge test. The original permit will be mailed within 20 business days.
Applicants requesting learner permits on site must provide the necessary identity documents, including:
Proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent resident status OR proof of authorized stay or temporary legal presence in the United States;
Two forms of identification, including an expired license or certified copy of driving record and other acceptable ID from Tennessee or another state if applicable;
Proof of any name changes if different than name on citizenship documents (this includes original Birth Certificate);
Two forms of proof of Tennessee residency with your name and resident address - NO P.O. BOXES (documents must be current and dated within last four months); and
A Social Security number or sworn affidavit if no Social Security number has been issued.
If eligible, applicants may also schedule road skills test appointments after the written knowledge test.
