Woodbury girls capture title

Hard work and continued progress resulted in Woodbury Grammar’s girls capturing the Cannon County Grammar School Girls Tournament Championship.

The Lady Cubs jumped out to a fast start and never looked back on the way to a 35-24 win against Woodland.
Woodbury Grammar has been absent from the finals in recent years but a strong group of talented players that have been together finally brought it all together against a solid Woodland team that had won the regular-season championship.

Woodbury jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first quarter to set the tone. The Lady Cubs led 28-10 at the half.
Hannah Haley led a balanced attack with 10 points and added four rebounds. Tournament MVP Tori Knox was a steady force and capped a strong tournament with nine points, four steals and three assists.

Hannah Farnsworth scored six points and collected four steals. Maggie Cook (4 points, 3 rebounds) and Oliva Walkup (2) also got into the scoring column for Woodbury.

Kristin Fann led Woodland with nine points and six steals. Allie St. John (4), Sydney Reed (3), Taylor Sturgil (2), Hannah Mears (2), Madison Blanton (2) and Anna Grace Sissom (2) also got into the scoring for Woodland.

Knights 34, Bears 17
Maleah Scott had a double double with 26 points, 14 rebounds and added three blocks to lead Auburn’s Lady Knights to a 34-17 win against Short Mountain in the girls consolation game. Scott’s play was complimented by Hattie Fann (4), Kaitlyn Duggin (2) and Adrianna Reed (2) in the scoring column.
Anna Lawson and Makayla Underhill led Short Mountain with six points each. Erika Taylor added five.
Auburn jumped out to a 19-2 halftime lead as it held Short Mountain to 0-of-13 shooting in the first quarter and 1-of-19 for the first half.

Cubs 39, Knights 29
Woodbury had to survive a scare against Auburn in the girls semifinals.
The Lady Knights put up a strong fight before coming up short in the fourth quarter.
Tori Knox was a decisive factor in the game’s outcome. Knox scored 11 points, dished out five assists, collected five steals and pulled four rebounds.
Katie Linder also scored 11 for the Lady Cubs. Maggie Cook had a strong game with seven points, three rebounds and three steals. Hannah Haley finished with six points, eight rebounds and four steals. Oliva Walkup (2) and Hannah Farnsworth (2) also factored for Woodbury.
Auburn was led by Maleah Scott with 23 points and 19 rebounds. Katie Hancock (4) and Adrianna Reed (2) also scored.
Auburn led 15-12 at the half before Woodbury grabbed a 25-19 lead into the final quarter and held on for the win.

Warriors 44, Bears 24
Kristin Fann scored 20 points and Allie St. John added 10 to pace Woodland. Anna Grace Sissom tallied five for the winners.
Ana Lawson led Short Mountain with 10 points. Shianna Ashford added eight.
