Woman dies in McMinnville Hwy. accident

One person was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Christmas Day on McMinnville Hwy.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol has identified the deceased as Amanda N. Davis, 30, of Memphis.

According to the investigation by Trooper William Collier, Davis was traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 70 (McMinnville Hwy.) in a 2003 Ford Mustang. The second vehicle, a 2009 Nissan Frontier driven by William J. Melton of Smithville, was traveling west.

At around 5:09 p.m., Davis' vehicle crossed over the center line and struck Melton's vehicle head on. Davis' vehicle went off the right side of the roadway and came to rest in a ditch, the report states.

Melton's vehicle traveled a short distance down the roadway, turned over, and came to rest in the center of the road.

Davis was transported to Stones River Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Melton was treated for minor injuries.

Collier's report indicates that preliminary tests show Davis was under the influence of drugs and or alcohol at the time of the accident and was not wearing seat belt.
