Wolverines Take A Bite Out Of Lions

TONY STINNETT, Courier Co-Editor

Cannon County showed fight and put forth tremendous effort before falling to  a much bigger and more athletic La Vergne team, 69-56, at Robert A. Harris Gymnasium Saturday.

The Lions (8-4) suffered their first loss in seven games at the Lions Den. Cannon County trailed 26-24 at halftime, but La Vergne dominated the start of the third quarter to take control. The Wolverines opened the second half with a 15-0 run to stretch the lead to 41-24. Cody Ruehlen's 3-pointer ended the drought 4:12 into the deciding quarter.

Cannon County fought back and trimmed the lead to 10 several times in the third and fourth quarter but could never get over the hump against the talented La Vergne squad.

Four Lions, led by Jared Nave's 15 points, scored double figures. Colin Jones added 13, Ruehlen 12 and Justin Davenport 11. Cannon County will play a non-district game at Bledsoe County Monday.
