Where are the little green men?

News from the Mountain

BY CAROL GUNTER

Thursday is here with a mostly cloudy and cool day in the sixties. Over the weekend the seventies back for highs again. This to me is some great weather, we are having.

I haven't taken down the hummingbird feeders yet. I generally let them stay up a couple of weeks longer than the general rule of thumb of taking them down around the middle of September. The little hummers' traveling bags are probably packed and flight schedules have been confirmed most likely. Will miss them and their funny antics and their being so cute. They are at the feeders off and on all day long and can they ever fly fast. If I remember correctly, they consume 12,000 calories a day and can fly an amazing 34 mph. Their exercise program is far better than the one I've got going. That's the reason they're in great shape and I'm not.

Please be praying for these people: the family of Chloe Evelyn Bogle, Edith Miller, Fay Pitts, Ruth Brown, the family of Mr. Dewey Corley, Carlon and Mai Nell Melton, Charlie Mai Daniel and Denise Stanton. God hears our prayers and will comfort us in our time of need.

Hopefully, I will be putting the bird feeders out a little later on in the fall. I haven't done that in a few years. I like seeing all the different birds congregate eating and especially the red birds. I have been missing their presence but am going to remedy that as soon as I get the bird seed.

Haven't heard a peep about the little green men being out and about here lately. Clyde thinks they're very busy getting their supply of wood for what they are saying is gonna be quite a bad winter for us all. The invisible cow not saying anything because, of course, it can't talk. It just likes keeping company with the little green fellas as does that 10ft rabbit. They, too, want to stay warm this winter in that devil's hole that I told you before is not to far from me. The little aliens will have to stock up on food, also. Don't know what they like at all. Turkeys and deer might be at the top of their wish list.

Speaking of turkeys and deer, where are they? Not a one can I spot anywhere around here. Some turkeys easy to spot at the store but not around here for some reason. On TV the other morning I surmised a deer was trying to catch a ride with this motorist or wanted maybe her breakfast from McDonald's from what I gathered at first. Found out though she had hit the deer and had opened her door and the deer I guess was going after her, because he was hurt. She was okay but the deer died a short time later.

I told you about George my garden spider that I accidentally killed earlier. Well, I haven't seen another George since that fatal day. With the month of October coming up, I'm hoping I'll spot one amongst my azaleas or shrubbery. For sure I'll never have a fly swatter near another George.

I think I had better get these hummingbird feeders that are hanging below my $2.00 rain gauge down as soon as possible. There's a very overweight hummingbird sitting on top of my rain gauge and I'm afraid he's going to break it down, if he keeps sitting there too much longer. He evidently never left the feeders this summer, because his size is evidence of that. That rain gauge was one more big headache for me in getting it up and running properly. All that hard work will be for naught, if that happens, and it would take me another year to get another rain gauge up.

Guys have come out today to trim back a few of the trees in my privacy hedge that are too close to the power lines. Hope they do a good job as I don't want another nightmare on my hands like we had several years ago with the people that came out to set a new light pole on the bank from our ditch line. Aubrey talked with the guys before he went to work and told them more than once not to get in the ditch line. Aubrey hadn't been gone long till I looked out and kitchen window and the guy driving one of their big trucks has driven straight into that very wet ditch and almost turned the truck over and was he ever stuck. Ruts were up to my knees in that ditch line. The guys got the other truck over in our neighbor's field and hooked a long cable to the truck in the ditch to pull it out. I had to give Aubrey a call about what had just happened. Held the phone away from my ear as both of them got cleaned out in just a few seconds from what Aubrey was saying about the kind of people who were hired that didn't know beans about what they were doing! At least I saved on the Q tips that morning - only plus in all of this mess. We were promised everything would be fixed back, but that didn't happen. Few years went by. Aubrey finally told the guy in charge of this matter just to forget it and he would take care of it when he could himself. You know that I'm praying this morning these guys do know what they are doing.
