West Side’s boys made official what had been pretty clear all season during the Cannon County Grammar School Tourney at CCHS last week.

West Side capped a near-perfect season with a 40-31 win against Auburntown in the boys championship game at CCHS Saturday (Feb. 1).

West Side did not lose to a county foe all season and its only setback was a loss to Van Buren in the championship game of the James C. Haile State Invitational.

Although West Side earned the championship, Auburn would not go quietly and proved to be a worthy foe.
After a stirring overtime win in the semifinals, Auburn gave West Side a run for its money.

The Knights led 21-17 at the half and visions of an upset were real.

The third quarter was a nightmare for the Knights, who were 0-of-6 from the field. West Side, on the other hand, was 8-of-13 in the third quarter.

The third quarter swing the game in West Side’s favor for good. Auburn did not score in the third quarter as West Side ran out to a 34-21 advantage.

Brandon Miles led the championship effort with 14 points. Tournament MVP Brendon Cox added 12, followed by Charlie Parrish with seven, Marcus Gannon with four and Lane Willis with three.

Austin Duggin led Auburn with 15 points and added seven rebounds. Shawn Mathney scored six. Dale Thompson scored five points and pulled seven rebounds. Justin Whited (3) and Bradley Vickers (2) also got into the scoring column for Auburn.

Warriors 51, Bears 25
The Woodland Warriors turned back Short Mountain, 51-25, in the boys consolation game.
Woodland was led by Weston Hargrove’s 18 points. Treyton Fann had a strong game and narrowly missed a triple double. He scored 11 points, pulled nine rebounds and had nine steals.
Cole George scored seven. Jacob Raines (5), Blake Bush (3), Brandon Lack (3), Ty St. John (3) and Austin Taylor (2) all scored for Woodland.
Wesley Cunningham led Short Mountain with 8. Cort Litchford and Hunter Byford scored five, followed by Luke Alexander (4) and Chris Young (2).

Knights 41, Warriors 38
In the best boys game of the tournament, Auburn’s Knights came from behind to deal Woodland’s Warriors a 41-38 loss in overtime.
Austin Duggin led Auburn with 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Duggin came up big in the clutch. He scored 13 of his 29 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Dale Thompson had five points and 12 rebounds for Auburn. Shawn Mathney (4) and Bradley Vickers (3) also tallied for the Knights.
Treyton Fann led Woodland with 13 points and Cole George added 12. Weston Hargrove finished with seven. Blake Bush (3), Jacob Raines (2) and Austin Underwood (1) also scored.

Eagles 57, Bears 3
Brendon Cox scored 16 and Marcus Gannon added nine to lead West Side to a 57-3 win against Short Mountain in the semis. Charlie Parrish added seven points for the winning Eagles.
