West Side boys claim county title
Staff By TONY STINNETT, Courier Sports Editor West Side’s boys made official what had been pretty clear all season during the Cannon County Grammar School Tourney at CCHS last week. West Side capped a near-perfect season with a 40-31 win against Auburntown in the boys championship game at CCHS Saturday (Feb. 1). West Side did not lose to a county foe all season and its only setback was a loss to Van Buren in the championship game of the James C. Haile State Invitational. Although West Side earned the championship, Auburn would not go quietly and proved to be a worthy foe. The Knights led 21-17 at the half and visions of an upset were real. The third quarter was a nightmare for the Knights, who were 0-of-6 from the field. West Side, on the other hand, was 8-of-13 in the third quarter. The third quarter swing the game in West Side’s favor for good. Auburn did not score in the third quarter as West Side ran out to a 34-21 advantage. Brandon Miles led the championship effort with 14 points. Tournament MVP Brendon Cox added 12, followed by Charlie Parrish with seven, Marcus Gannon with four and Lane Willis with three. Austin Duggin led Auburn with 15 points and added seven rebounds. Shawn Mathney scored six. Dale Thompson scored five points and pulled seven rebounds.
