Uncle Dave descendant to speak



Michael Doubler, the great-grandson of Uncle Dave Macon, will speak at the May 12 meeting of the Cannon County Historical Society.
The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Cannon Senior Center, 609 Lehman St.

"We will meet at 6:30 p.m. for snacks and refreshments. The program will begin at 7 p.m.," said Joe Davenport, historical society chairman.
Doubler recently published "Uncle Dave Macon: A Photo Tribute." He is currently working on "Take It Away, Uncle Dave!." the first major biography of the Grand Ole Opry superstar. He also heads the Macon-Double Fellowship and participates in the leadership of Uncle Dave Macon Days Festival in Murfreesboro.

Doubler served 23 years on active duty as a Regular Army and full-time Army National Guard officer. He is a graduate of West Point and holds a doctorate degree in military history from The Ohio State University. From 1985-1988, he taught military history as a faculty member at West Point. Afterwards, he was assigned to the National Guard Bureau in Washington DC, working in the Pentagon. Following his retirement, head headed Doubler Enterprises, a research and writing firm, for over a decade.

He previously authored "Closing with the Enemy; How GIs Fought the War in Europe, 1944-1945," which received two national book awards and was included in the Chief of Staff of the Army's professional reading list. He is also the author of Civilian in Peace, Soldier in War: The Army National Guard, 1636-2000," considered the definitive history of the Army Guard.

Doubler has appeared on several national media outlets, including The History Channel, CBS News, ABC World News Tonight and National Public Radio. He has authored more than 20 special studies and reports for the federal government and is a frequent lecturer.
