Three local residents were charged with DUI recently.
• Deputy Seth Perry was on Short Mountain Road on Aug. 20 when he observed a blue and gray 1985 Chevy Monte Carlo traveling with no visible taillights on any kind. Deputy Perry stopped the vehicle at the junction of Short Mountain Rd. and Taylor Women Rd. The driver exited the vehicle and shouted something to Deputy Perry which he did not understand.
Deputy Perry ordered the driver back inside the vehicle. Upon speaking the driver, Russell Walls, the deputy told Walls he stopped him because his car had no rear lights. Walls said he knew it did not.
When asked for his driver’s license, Walls said he did not have one because it was suspended. Deputy Perry observed that Walls had slurred speech, red, watery eyes, and appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicant.
Deputy Perry asked Walls if he had been drinking. Walls said he had not been drinking, but had taken his medication. Walls said he had taken Valium and Percocet.
Due to his apparent state of intoxication, and his allegedly poor performance on field sobriety tests, Walls was placed under arrest for DUI. He was also charged with driving on a suspended license, violation of the implied consent law, violation of the financial responsibility law and violation of the light law. Bond was set at $3000. Initial court date is Sept. 20.
His car was towed from the roadway by Woodbury Auto Express and store there.
Deputy Matt Parsley assisted in the investigation and arrest.
