TBI investigating sheriff's department

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and possibly another state agency, is in the process of investigating the Cannon County Sheriff's Department.

"At the request of 16th District Attorney General Jennings Jones, TBI Agents are investigating an allegation that an employee of the Cannon County Sheriff's Department mishandled property. Our investigation remains active and ongoing," TBI spokesperson Josh DeVine said Monday.

Sources have told the Cannon Courier the office of the Tennessee Comptroller's of the Treasury is also conducting an investigation of the sheriff's department, but a spokesperson said Monday he could not confirm that information.

"The Comptroller's Office has broad authority to review government entities including the Cannon County Sheriff's Office," John Dunn said. "It is our policy to not comment further."

Whether the Comptroller's Office is investigating the local sheriff's department would not be known until if, and when, it issues a report.

Citizens who might have information related to fraud, waste or abuse at the sheriff's department, or any county department, can contact the Comptroller's Office at 1-800-232-5454.

The TBI also welcomes tips about possible criminal activity in Tennessee.

According to the TBI website, "Our employees will review tips as soon as possible and, if appropriate, forward them for further follow-up. Please include your contact information in case we have questions or would like to contact you."

"Please note: You may remain anonymous, but information received may be incomplete for follow-up and investigative purposes. Tips that result in the capture of any of TBI's Top Ten Most Wanted may be eligible for reward money."
