Sterling Pitts



Mr. Sterling Pitts, 90, of Woodbury passed away on January 16, 2016 after an extended illness. He was born on May 9, 1925 in Woodbury, TN. His parents were the late Shelah Pitts and Jennie Justice Elkins Pitts. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jean Hayes Pitts, a daughter, Jan Cheryl Whittemore; brothers, David Pitts and Paul Pitts; sisters, Eva Lee Reed, Donzie Greer and Ona Prater.

He is survived by his daughter, Yvonne (Eddie) Curtis of Woodbury; brother, Flavil Ray (Julia) Pitts of McMinnville; sister, Una Ray of Tullahoma; four granddaughters and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Pitts was a veteran of the U. S. Navy. He served in WWII his ship, the USS Gamble, was damaged during some of the battles taking place around Iwo Jima. He worked as a carpenter and painter for many years. He also preached at some local churches of Christ in the past. He was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ. He enjoyed planting a vegetable garden. Mr. Pitts loved to work on anything mechanical and loved to go fishing any chance he had.

Visitation will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Sunday, January 17, 2016 from 10-2 pm. Funeral services will follow in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home at 2 pm. Interment will be in Leoni Cemetery.
