Cannon County High School celebrated Homecoming on Friday night with the usual events like the parade, pep rally and the crowning of a Queen. However, once the game started with district rival Smith County, it was all Owls as they clipped the Lions 42-3 at Fred Schwartz Field. CCHS is now 2-5, while SCHS improves to 3-4.

The game had an interesting start on the opening kickoff as the ball

went over the head of the Owls return team. It landed at the Smith 1, and the Lions recovered thinking they scored a touchdown. However, it was ruled down at the Smith 1 and the ball going to the Owls.

Unfortunely, it was the best chance the Lions had of putting it in the end zone during the entire game as the Owls took control and dominated in all aspects of the contest.

During the first quarter, the Owls scored two touchdowns, including a two-point conversion to make the score 15-0 with 7:20 left in it.

The Lions had their best offensive possession on the next series, but they had to settle for a 32-yard field goal from senior placekicker

Josh Walkup to make the score 15-3 with 2:44 remaining in the opening

quarter.

The Owls added another touchdown with only four seconds left in the first to make the score 22-3.

SCHS put the game away in the second quarter as it converted a fake punt from deep in their territory at the Smith 9. Then, on third and 15 from the CCHS 27, the Owls connected on a touchdown pass to increase the lead to 29-3 with 5:01 left in the first half.

Two minutes later, the Owls scored on a 61-yard run to make the score 36-3 at the half. They scored their final points of the game on their first offense series of the second half with a 16-yard touchdown pass to expand their advantage to 42-3 with 10:19 left in the third

quarter. The mercy rule went into effect, and the game ended with no more scoring.

It was the Lions seventh consecutive loss on Homecoming, as their last win during the special celebration came on Oct. 2, 2009 against Livingston Academy, 22-7.

Next week, CCHS makes the short trip down to Murfreesboro to face Middle Tennessee Christian School on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
