Abbey Sissom and Marshall McReynolds were named The Cannon Courier Athletes of the Year during the fourth Cannon Courier Hall of Fame and All Sports Banquet at The Arts Center of Cannon County (May 15).

Sissom led the Lionettes to their third Class AA State Tournament appearance in four years in 2013-14. Along the way, Sissom also proved to be one of the top female basketball players in Tennessee.

Sissom signed with MTSU in November and was named Class AA Miss Basketball in March. She capped her career with 2,606 points, which is second all-time in Cannon County basketball history.

The sharp-shooting guard also was named District 8-AA Player of the Year for the second straight year. She was also named to USA Today’s All-Tennessee team.

“This is quite an honor,” said Sissom, who is a three-time recipient of the award. “I’m very appreciative because we have several quality athletes at Cannon County. It has been an honor playing basketball for Cannon County.”

McReynolds was a three-sport standout for the Lions, starring on the soccer, basketball and cross-country teams. He advanced to the TSSAA A/AA State Tournament in cross-country in the fall.

McReynolds turned his attention to boys basketball in the winter and helped lead the Lions into the Region 4-AA semifinals where they fell one win shy of reaching the Substate. McReynolds’ strong defense and playmaking ability were strong components for the team throughout the season; however, the junior guard turned his play up a notch in the postseason when he became one of the team’s most consistent performers.

Following an outstanding basketball season, McReynolds headed to the soccer field and proved to be one of the top defenders not only on his team, but throughout the district.
