SHENANDOAH opens the Arts Center of Cannon County’s 2011 Stagedoor Series

"It's a story about family – about a father desperately trying to keep his family out of the Civil War. It is 1863 and the Civil War is raging. In the Shenandoah Valley, in northwest Virginia where his farmhouse sits in the middle of the ebb and flow of the fighting, wealthy landowner Charlie Anderson, a widower, father of six sons and a daughter is determined to keep his family out of the action. A man of peace despite his autocratic behavior, he steadfastly refuses to take sides in the Civil War, but bit by bit, Anderson’s isolationism- and his way of living- are torn apart. The score of Shenandoah includes down-home audience favorites Next to Lovin (I Like Fightin'), Freedom, Violets and Silverbells and The Only Home I Know.

Directed by Cyndie Verbeten, with music direction by Claire Brewer and chorography by Ted Verbeten, the principles in the Shenandoah cast include Tom Marcrom as Charlie Anderson, Lance Chandler as Jacob Anderson, Matt Smith as James Anderson, Cody Rutledge as Nathan Anderson, Matt Hunter as John Anderson, Allison Marcrom as Jenny Anderson, Adam Laporte as Henry Anderson, Bryson Bell as Robert Anderson (the Boy), and Laurie Burger as Anne Anderson. The cast also includes Zavior Phillips as Gabriel, Ben George (Stephen Jones-April 1 & 2 performance) as Sam, Don O. Henry  as Reverend Byrd, Parker Deal as Tinkham, Tim Rodriguez as the Corporal, and Ted Verbeten as Sergeant Johnson. The ensemble includes Zach Whitehead, Chris McLaurin, Nick Mullins, Casey Pinter, John Naylor, David Cummings, Joseph Brown, Lisa McLaurin, Samantha Kerley, Colin McLaurin, Cora Frye, Karen Wainright, Lydia McLaurin, and Matt Hunter.

Founded in 1990, the award-winning Arts Center of Cannon County is a unique model for rural arts organizations. Situated in an under-served rural area in a town of 2,000 and a county of 12,000, The Arts Center annually attracts more than 40,000 visitors from a region covering over a 100-mile radius.  Drawing on the blue-collar roots of its community, the organization focuses on self-sufficiency, fiscal responsibility and social entrepreneurship.  The Arts Center is partially funded by the Tennessee Arts Commission, Southern Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
