Senior center wins top honors



Cannon County Senior Center receives honors at the Annual Tennessee Federation on the Aging (TFA) and Tennessee Association of Senior Centers (TASC) Conference.

 The Cannon County Senior Center was nominated as a spotlight award program for the state competition.  They received notice in August that the SilverSneakers program that the Woodbury Center provides had made the top five programs for the State. 

Fourteen programs across the state where nominated and five made it into the finals to present at this year's Conference held at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro, Oct. 15-17.  McMinn Senior Center, Jonesborough Senior Center, Maury County Senior Center, Fair Park Senior Center and Cannon County Senior Center programs had to meet the following guidelines for the Best Case Practice Spotlight Award;

Program Nominees/Program must demonstrate three or more of the following:

- Program could be duplicated

- Program drew in new participants

- Created new partnerships for the Senior Center

- Created a new income source for the Senior Center

- Program increased awareness of the Senior Center outside participants age range

- Demonstrates Senior Center as a focal point on the community

All five Centers presented and displayed programs for the full session on Wednesday October 17.  Holly Currier, Director from McMinn Senior Center presented "Never Too Old to Play", Jonesborough Director, Joan Miller presented "Variety & Comedy Talent Show" Brenda Grimsley, Director of Maury County Senior Center presented "35th Anniversary & Volunteer Recognition, Peggy Houston, Director of Fair Park Senior Center presented "Senior Police Academy" and Connie Rigsby, Director of Cannon County Senior Center "SilverSneakers Program".

 Ms. Pam Dethloff Vice President of the TASC presented director Connie Rigsby with the 2012 Best Case Practice Spotlight Award.  The Center will receive one full 2013 Conference Registration Fee worth $175 and a trade show pull out banner worth $220.  The top five program displays will travel and be displayed throughout Tennessee between October 2012 and September 2013 making a stop at the TN Capitol at Day on the Hill in spring of next year.  The TFA and TASC Conference will be held in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge in the fall of 2013. 

Director Connie Rigsby stated that "the SilverSneakers program has been a wonderful addition in physical fitness programs for the Cannon County Center and Sheila Long the SilverSneakers instructor was one of the best in the state.' "We are very excited to represent the State as the 2012 Best Case Practice Spotlight Award Winner and the other top five programs where tough competition and proved that Centers across the state are providing outstanding program for TN Seniors."
