Tucked snugly into the rolling hills of Readyville is an old fashioned twist on a modern bed and breakfast.

Wanda and Donnell Thompson opened The Blue Porch about three years ago to provide an escape for local and out-of-town residents, alike.

The couple built a custom home, complete with indoor and outdoor amenities for their guests.

“When you come to The Blue Porch, you should just prepare just relax and unwind,” Wanda Thompson said. “People come out just to take a deep breath and enjoy a meal.”

After overnighters and friends began requesting the Thompsons as caterers and special event meals at The Blue Porch.

“We really never intended to be caterers,” she remembered. “It was really accidental. We had people come out to our house and just really, really like it and felt really at home, and people just started asking us if they could come out here and eat.

“We thought we just as well just try it and see if it works, and it has just worked really well.”

That was in 2009, and the state-certified bed and breakfast and catering has been going well ever since.

Being custom caterers, the Thompsons offer menu options based on the specifications of each individual or event; The Blue Porch can feed as few as two people or as many as 30 on-site and many more off-site.

“We actually talk to the people that we fix food for and find out their likes and dislikes, and we can go as simple as you’d like or as high and fancy as you’d like. The Blue Porch is where adventure meets traditional,” Thompson continued.

“Some people are really, really adventurous and (ask for) whatever is on your mind, which is what I love to do. That is my favorite thing to do. We could do traditional, and we can do it all day long, but we really like when they’re willing to do something different. Everything we make is homemade, so no matter what it is, they’re getting something homemade.”

Murfreesboro resident Katie Henry has been visiting The Blue Porch for years now; its relaxing atmosphere and quality food that keeps her returning.

“She’s worth it, it’s affordable, and the food is always fantastic,” Henry said, adding that she’s utilized The Blue Porch for girls’ days out, catering parties and

“The beauty of The Blue Porch is that you’re still in town, but you feel like you’ve left the city behind. Her place is very tranquil, there’s beautiful landscaping everywhere, and the home is really a place where you can get away and relax.”
