The Tennessee State Fair has opened registration on-line for those across the Volunteer State wishing to participate in any of the categories listed for competition from baking cakes and pies, to shooting a prize winning photograph to raising a blue ribbon championship dairy cow.
Hundreds of entries are received each year in the Fair's competition program which organizers of the annual event held in Nashville say is the heart and soul of the State Fair.
"For more than 100 years homemakers, kids, farmers and others have been entering the contests hosted by the Fair," said Scott Jones, manager of the Tennessee State Fair.
He explained that participants who enter the various competitions at the Fair do so for a number of reasons.
"They get to test their talents against others, learn more through the judging process about the particular area in which they have a special interest, and of course they get to compete against the very best from all of Tennessee's 95 counties," Jones said.
He pointed out that there is a competition category for almost any possible talent or interest noting as an example that in the adult baking competition there are 63 different areas in which entrants may compete.
He said it is much the same in all other competition divisions including creative arts, livestock, agriculture, and others.
"And," Jones said, "it's important to know that the competitions are open for both youth and adults."
He encouraged those who may be interested in entering one or perhaps more of the competition areas to visit the Tennessee State Fair website www.tnstatefair.org/competitions.
Jones emphasized that the registration process is "easy," and that the website provides a full explanation of rules and guidelines for all entries.
This year's State Fair opens on Friday, September 9, and runs for 10 days, closing on Sunday, September 18. The Fair is staged annually at the State Fairgrounds in Nashville.
