East Side Elementary School Principal Karen King addresses students, parents and teachers Tuesday night during the school's Back-to-School Bash. In addition to enjoying a BBQ dinner and free school supplies, attendees also learned of the many improvements that have occurred at the school during the summer vacation in preparation for the upcoming year.
NORTHBROOK, Ill., July 22 -- Middle Tennessee senior running back Phillip Tanner, a standout in the classroom and on the field, has been named to an elite group of 106 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team (R) as announced by the American Football Coaches Association and Allstate Insurance Company today.
The Cannon Courier newspaper has new ownership, effective today.
Andy Bryson, a mainstay at the Courier since 1959 and the owner for the last 15 years, announced that he has sold the newspaper to McMinnville businessman Ron Fryar, a veteran of the Tennessee newspaper business.

Multiple charges were filed against a man accused of possessing a variety of illegal drugs during a traffic stop Monday night on Old Woodbury Highway, a Rutherford County sheriff’s sergeant reported.
The Veterans and Concerned Citizens for the Veterans of Cannon County will meet at the Senior Citizens Center on Lehman Street next to the Veterans Memorial Gymnasiusm in Woodbury at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 6.
Funeral services for Newton Wayne Wright, Sr., 49, of Murfreesboro were held Tuesday, July 28, 2009 in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bro. Brian Saddler officiating. Burial was in Cherry Cemetery with Woodbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
NASHVILLE — Tennessee's Attorney General has issued a ruling clarify that it is still illegal for persons with handgun permits to carry firearms to parks and athletic fields while the facilities are being used for school events.
Sol Berger, founder of Colonial Corporation of America with headquarters in Woodbury, died Saturday at his home in Scarsdale, NY. Mr. Berger came to Woodbury in 1947 and opened a shirt factory, first employing only a few people. The business grew rapidly. Soon the building was not large enough to house the operation and an addition was built. Then another, and yet another until Colonial Corporation of America employed more than 2,100 people in the plant here in Woodbury and operated plants in other towns in the South including one in Auburntown, plus one in Jamaica.
The lazy days of summer. Where are they? I wonder. Back in another time and place, I suppose, way back before the responsibilities of parenting and jobs took center stage in our lives. The lazy days of summer I last remember were spent at the pool, swimming, jumping, playing Marco Polo. We toasted under the hot sun, even shivered with blue lips when the summer breeze blew cool on a cloudy day.
While it’s always been a struggle to separate facts from misinformation made to sound like facts, with the growth of the Internet and email service, that process has gotten harder than ever.
Whether you’re one of those folks who gets dozens of emails a day, or one of the folks who’s not online but gets printed versions of a lot of “informational” emails, it’s easy to get duped by lies cloaked as truths.

This will allow our students and parents the opportunity to meet you and see their classrooms if they have not already. It will also be an excellent opportunity for you as the classroom teacher to “set the tone” for the beginning of the school year.

Congratulations on your retirement from the Cannon Courier. I have had the great opportunity to work with you as a reporter, then owner of the Cannon Courier and also as the Foreman of the Cannon County Grand Jury for the past twenty years. During this time I have found you to be honest, fair and dedicated in being Editor of the Cannon Courier and as Foreman of the Cannon County Grand Jury.
The Cannon County Senior Center and Board would like to thank everyone that donated to our Bucket Brigade on July 17th. We appreciate all from Woodbury and surounding counties that came through to give. All the proceeds raised will go to help with the cost of installing a new front door at the Center.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mazle Lee Phillips Reed Gannon, 76, were held Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bro. Rannie Phillips officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery with Woodbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Gannon died Sunday, July 19 at her home after an extended illness.
Murray Brandon, 84, of the Burt community, died Friday, July 24, 2009 at Woodbury Nursing Center following an extended illness. A native of Cannon County, Mr. Brandon was a Deacon at Burt Baptist Church, a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army and retired from Carrier Corporation. Services were held Sunday, July 26 at Burt Baptist Church with Bro. David Moody officiating. Burial was in Cateston Cemetery with Woodbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
NASHVILLE – Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky will play host to the second Sun Belt Classic when they face SEC foes Tennessee and Vanderbilt, respectively, at the Sommet Center, Dec. 11.
Come view the Cannon County Family and Community Education (FCE) clubs Cultural Arts Exhibit at the Cannon County Arts Center August 3rd – 7th. The Cultural Arts Competition is held annually among FCE members at the local level in which the top winners go on to compete at the state level.
