Pill In Underpants Brings Charge Against Prisoner

A man serving a jail sentence was charged with bringing drugs into the Cannon County Jail recently.

Cannon County Sheriff's Deputy Seth Perry was contacted on Nov. 8 by Corrections Officer Albert Summers, who informed him that Corrections Officer Paul Reed had caught David Bedwell bringing contraband into the jail.

Deputy Perry went to the jail, spoke with CO Reed, read his statement, saw a pill, and filled out a warrant on Bedwell for Introduction of Contraband into a Penal Institution.

According to CO Reed’s statement, while searching Bedwell, CO Reed told Bedwell to give him his clothing. While searching Bedwell’s blue thermal pants, CO Reed found a can of Grizzly Straight Dip in the crotch area. Bedwell then stated, “Damn Paul, you got my dip.”

The corrections officer then asked Bedwell if had had anything else on him. Bedwell stated he did not. CO Reed continued his search. Inside Bedwell’s underwear he discovered a pill, orange in color. Bedwell stated the pill was “an opiate blocker used for detoxing.” He also stated, “please don’t charge me I got kids.”

The pill was identified as Suboxone and CO Reed notified his departmental superiors of the discovery. Bedwell’s bond was set at $6,000. Initial court date is Dec. 6.
