Cannon County native Nathan Nichols was unsuccessful in his bid for a circuit court judgeship on Tuesday.

Nichols lost to Barry Tidwell in the Republican Primary for the position of Circuit Court Judge Division III District 16.

"I appreciate every person who took the time to vote in this election," Nichols said. "Though I was not successful district-wide, it warms my heart to see that so many in Cannon County supported me. I am very proud to call Cannon County my home."

Tidwell has been serving in the position since the death of Judge M. Keith Siskin last July. He was appointed to it by Gov. Bill Haslam in November.

With 100 percent of the votes counted in both Cannon and Rutherford counties, Tidwell won with 10,377 votes. Nichols received 4,447 votes.

Nichols easily carried Cannon County, winning 76.49 percent of the vote. Cannon's vote count was 693 for Nichols and 213 for Tidwell.
