2012 Sports Hall Of Fame Inductees Announced

Cannon County’s rich athletic tradition will be honored when the second class of the Cannon County Sports Hall of Fame is inducted during the 2012 Cannon Courier Hall of Fame and High School Sports Banquet.

Terry Gannon (coach/athlete), Glenn Higgins (athlete), Bobby Parker (coach), Harold Patrick (contributor) and Vicky Todd (athlete) were unanimous selections of the Hall of Fame Committee and will become the second class inducted when they are enshrined May 17 at the Cannon County High School
Gymnasium at 6 p.m.

“Looking at the names of this class, as well as last year’s class, we are talking about our rich history and
tradition with these Hall of Famers,” said one committee member (the five-person Hall of Fame Committee remains anonymous. “When you talk about these people and what they meant to Cannon County athletics, it’s a ‘Who’s Who’ of outstanding athletes.”

Legendary MTSU Track and Field Coach Dean Hayes, who has helped coach the USA Olympic Track team four times and also coached the World Games, will be the keynote speaker.

The Hall of Fame and High School Sports Awards Banquet, sponsored by The Cannon Courier, went on sale Monday.

Tickets are $12 and can either be purchased at the Cannon Courier Office or online at cannoncourier.com. You may also call the Cannon Courier at 563-2512 and pay via credit card and have tickets held at the door. Deadline to purchase tickets is May 15.

In addition to the Hall of Fame induction, The Cannon Courier’s Players of the Year in each of CCHS’ 13
TSSAA-sponored sports will be named, in addition to the Male and Female Athletes of the Year; the Female and Male Publisher’s Cup Winners for top scholar-athletes, and the Lions Award.

Not only was Gannon an outstanding athlete at Woodbury Central High School, but he also coached the boys basketball team to the state tournament in 1985 — their only appearance.

Glenn Higgins was a dominant football player who went on to star at Mississippi State, where he earned All-SEC honors.

Bobby Parker was instrumental in the lives of numerous Cannon County athletes as their coach and mentor.

Harold Patrick spent years bringing the football and basketball action to fans over the radio airwaves. His contributions helped create many memories and enjoyable evenings for Cannon County sports fans.

Vicky Todd is regarded as one of the most outstanding girls basketball players in Cannon County history. She is the second-leading scorer in program history, a three-time All-Stater and led the Lionettes to the 1969 Final Four.
