Cannon County went 1-3 in four games last week but the Lions’ baseball team continued to show progress and notched its first District 8-AA win of the season.

Nick Vasser (1-3) earned his first varsity win as the Lions beat Murfreesboro Central Magnet, 6-5, in Murfreesboro Monday (April 9). Vasser went five innings, allowed three hits, two runs, both unearned, to notch the win. Justin Tobin pitched two innings to notch his second save.

Vasser, whose sports a 1.17 eaerned run average in three district starts, also was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored. Dalton Bell continued his solid season with a 2-for-3 performance that included two runs scored and one RBI.

Brian Duggin, Dustin Mears and Chase Gunter also had run-scoring hits in the win.

• The Lions were not as fortunate against Murfreesboro Central in the second game of the series, dropping an 11-1 decision Tuesday.

Vasser and Bell had Cannon County’s only hits. Dustin Mears walked in both plate appearances.

• Cannon County dropped a 20-5 decision in non-district action against Community Thursday (April 12). The Lions fell behind early but battled back and cut the deficit to three before the Vikings put the game away in the late innings.

Dalton Bell had the only multi-hit game for the Lions, going 2-for-4. He also scored a run. Austin Brown had a RBI double and scored two runs. Nathan McGuire and Jackson Mason also had RBI singles. Brent Duggin added a hit for the Lions.

• Cannon County put together one of its best games of the season in a 6-5 nine-inning loss at Middle Tennessee Christian School Friday (April 13).

The Lions fell behind 5-1 but scored three in the sixth and tied the game with one in the seventh before the host Cougars broke through in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

Austin Brown’s two-out RBI single plated Brent Duggin with the tying run in the seventh. Nathan McGuire had a clutch RBI single in the sixth. Dalton Bell, Brian Duggin, Brent Duggin, Brown, Mason, McGuire and Trent Bragg all had hits.

Justin Tobin pitched four-plus innings and allowed just one run.

The Lions are playing today at Livingston Academy.
