Welcome Back!!!! I hope that each of you had a great holiday season and are looking forward to a GREAT 2011! We are moving very quickly into this New Year with several annual events.

Electrical Demonstration Contest- Every January, the contest for the local, or classroom, contest is the electrical demonstration contest. This year we have added a new twist in the contest. With all the focus being on “green” energy, we are opening up the contest to include demonstrations to teach about electrical conservation, alternative forms of electricity, or electrical safety. Please refer to the 4-H yearbook for more information regarding the electrical demonstration contest.

County Public Speaking Date Set- Long has been the tradition here in Cannon County of November being the public speaking month. This past November saw more participants in the local, or classroom, public speaking contest than ever before! This year over 500 4-H members participated in the classroom contests. The date for our classroom contest has been set; the contest will be held on Tuesday, January 25th at West Side Elementary School with registration beginning at 6:00 p.m. and the contest beginning at 6:30. In case of snow, the contest will be held on Tuesday, February 1st at the same location and times. Please remember that all participants in the local contest are invited and everyone who participates will receive an award.

State 4-H Congress- Attention all 9th and 10th grade 4-H members; a great opportunity awaits you. The opportunities to make friends across the state, learn “hands-on” about government in Tennessee, and have the experience of a lifetime. All this can be found at the 64th annual “Tennessee 4-H Congress”.  Tennessee 4-H Congress will be held at the Nashville Downtown Sheraton March 27th – 30th. While at 4-H Congress, participants will get to visit our state elected officials, introduce, debate, and vote on mock legislative bills, have the opportunity to run for 4-H Congress Governor, Speaker of the House, and Speaker of the Senate, ride on the General Jackson, and much, much more. If you are interested in being a delegate to the 2011 Congress, just submit an essay of less than 500 words entitled “Tennessee 4-H – Reflection to Perfection” and submit it to the 4-H office no later than Jan. 31st.

Honor Club Service Learning Project- The 4-H Honor Club will be meeting on Thursday, January 20th. We will be meeting at the Cannon County Farm Bureau at 5:30 to assemble goodie bags for the residents of the Woodbury Nursing Center, which we will be delivering at 6:30 p.m. This is a great opportunity for you to gather with friends, have fun, and help our neighbors at the same time.

Attention all Homeschoolers-  If you are looking for a way to learn new things, make new friends, and be a part of a great organization then Cannon County 4-H has a place for you!! Our next meeting of the Home school group will be held Friday, January 21st at the Woodbury Lions Club Building, beginning at 1:00 p.m. We will be discussing the many different opportunities in 4-H, as well as looking to the future.

Wednesday Jan. 12th- Auburntown

Thursday Jan. 13th- Westside- 7th and 8th grades

Friday Jan 14th- Eastside

Wednesday Jan. 19th – Short Mtn.

Thursday Jan. 20th - Westside – 4th through 6th grades

Tuesday Jan. 25th- Woodland ; Ms. Sissom’s 6th grade, 7th grade and 4th grade

Wednesday Jan. 26th – Woodland; Mr. Brazle’s 6th grade, 8th grade and 5th grade
