SMITHVILLE - Lack of consistent scoring cost Cannon County a shot at two wins on the golf course last week.
The Lions lost a tri-match against Monterey and Gordonsville Monday (Aug. 19) and when players saw the scores it revealed what they had already assumed.

“We could have beaten both teams if we had shot closer to what we have been,” junior Nick Vassar said. “I can only speak for myself but I didn’t hit it well and I was not consistent.”

Vassar’s score had counted in every match during his debut season; however, his 54 was high score on the team in the tri-match. Hunter Vickers  led the way with a 42, followed by Briar Jakes (45), Josh Ruehlen (48) and William Parker (49).

Monterey (180) won the match by three strokes over Gordonsville (183) and four strokes over Cannon County (184).

The Lions lost to Smith County by four strokes Tuesday (Aug. 20). Jakes’ 43 led the way, followed by Vickers (45), Jacob Nave (46) and Vassar (49).

Cannon County didn’t find it any easier in a tri-match against defending Class A/AA champion Macon County and Upperman. Macon County (143) easily distanced the Lions (176) and Upperman (185). Jakes’ 39 led the way for the Lions. Vickers shot a 43.
