LETTER: Reader wants more sports coverage

To the editor:

Cannon County's basketball gymnasiums are now quiet.

We are filled with pride for our teams, win or loss.

I also believe Cannon is recovering from the lack of fairplay from some members of opposing teams and blatant disregard of rules by some referees, on occasion.

Let me address what I believe is also the lack of fairplay by our sports and schools editor. There are six grammar schools whose youngsters played their hearts out this season.

I believe, as others, that some recognition should be shown in the Courier for the dedication and accomplishments of these youngsters. High School Stars are not found suddenly in the cabbage patch! Brought up through the ranks by grammar school coaches, teachers, principals and supporting parents, they excel!

At least publish weekly results for these teams, individual scores, players, scores of games, etc. No mention of anything else if Mr. Stinnett is afraid of being accused of prejudiced.

As sports editor a final summary of schools, teams, members of teams, coaches and cheerleaders at the end of season play would be called for.

Mr. Stinnett's articles Oct. 24, Oct. 31, 2012 -Border wars and Courier mention Dec. 5, 2012 does not do justice for the county.

Is it so difficult in this cyberspace age to obtain results for publication?

Nothing is sweeter for youngsters to see their names in hometown newspapers for all the right reasons.

Newsprint too costly? I would gladly pay more for a subscription.

Each individual school is asked to send their stats to the courier if they would like them published. Usually only a couple of schools do that. Mr. Stinnett can't be at 3 different games in the same night, so the schools are asked to help

Mr. Stinnett could go to one grammar school game per week and give every team some coverage. The grammar school teams need to have sports reporting for them instead of just high school.
