Cannon County doesn’t have a middle school, although there has been considerable discussion about implementing one over the years.

However, the school system does have Middle Grades Sports. There are football, baseball and softball teams, mostly comprised of seventh and eighth graders at Woodbury Grammar School, which play against out-of-county competition.

Middle Grades Sports is one of the items on the agenda for the Cannon County Board of Education when it convenes for its regular monthly meeting Thursday (May 10).

All schools have kids participating in middle school sports, with only the middle school baseball team wearing Woodbury grammar school colors. FootBall and softball ball wear high school colors and lions logo. Just to clarify the statement on the courrier

Yes we can focus on sports. Maybe you and your republican friends can work on getting some funding to build a middle school so we can get away from the county basketball and have something to build on for the future. What is CCHS dropout rate?

Republican or Democrat makes no difference to me on this topic. Are you implying the Democrats do nothing to support our schools?

I have three children who have attended the schools system in Cannon County. Both my boys played basketball from the time they were old enough to dribble and continue on today. My youngest plays / starts on the Lions basketball team last year and hopefully will again in the 2012 season. There has been a DAVENPORT on the Lions basketball team for the last seven years.

My oldest son played on the Lions football team his freshman year and started for three years on the Lions basketball team. He then coached the WGS boys’ team when no one else wanted it and led them to a very good regular season along with a County Tournament Championship. Sports has dominated my life for several years because of them and I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

However, my focus as a parent has been and always will be on the educational aspect of school. That is the number one goal I have for each of them and I consider it the most important unlike some people who live, breathe and eat basketball.

You want money to build a middle school then I suggest you contact your commissioner and your school board member and ask them why we spend $800,000 a year on schools with less than 150 students in them K-8 that are 40, 50 and almost 60 years old. That money would go a long way toward building a new school.

You are preaching to the choir about the need for a middle school. I have been screaming it for years. We needed one 15 years ago, but SPORTS is the reason why we don't have one now. I am all for sports in our children’s lives, but it should not rule how we think or act towards creating a better educational environment for them.
