LETTER: Quarry Must Be Stopped

The planned Stones River Quarry at the intersection of John Bragg Hwy. and Bradyville Rd. must be stopped.  The negative impact to those of us who live in the area relative to property values, structural damage, increased highway deterioration, safety issues, and quality of life will be significant.

In addition, the entire county will suffer due to reduction in desirability for new businesses and residents to locate within Cannon County.  Do we need a repeat of the disaster across the road from the Arts Center? How many ugly structures and businesses owned by outside entities with no thought to what benefits county residents and businesses can John Bragg Hwy. absorb?

We can no longer tolerate those who would come into our neighborhoods, live off of our assets, depress property values, and discourage advantageous growth. Growth in a community is good and inevitable and cannot be stopped, but it can be controlled.

The rights of those who have made a life for their families in Cannon County cannot be ignored and should take precedence over those who would join our community. To fight this it will take a concerted community effort.

Why can't the residents of the county see what going on with this new Quarry once the new road comes through it will more than likely shut down it just an outside company the see's quick profit from the new highway and why can't or Quarry handle the project but also Like the quarry the ones that owned the land get a nickel for ever ton of rocks that leave from there so its greed on both sides of the fence...

I have lived in the county all my life, and once again all I see is people trying to stop a business from coming to Cannon County. It doesn't matter what kind of business it is, if we don't won't it here it can't come in. We better be thankful that someone is willing to bring a company here and provide work for our residence and think of our young people graduating from school. Where do they go? What do they have to look forward too? A town that is going to dry up and blow away because someone does not want other companies to have a piece of their pie!! May God Bless us all.

Fuzzy I have lived here all my life too and I am one of the most pro new businesses / new industry being brought into this county people that I know.

However, take a look at the two current rock quarries’ that are in operation now. Vulcan is down to a one man operation. The other one beside the river is either a one or two man operation.

A new quarry is not going to bring new jobs for our young people to work at and it will do nothing but destroy our environment and make another eyesore as people drive into town. Why would anyone want another rock quarry to be brought to Cannon County is beyond me.

I want businesses to locate here and I want our county to grow and prosper and to flourish, but not at the cost of creating a sink hole for someone else to get rich off of and leave for us to clean up.

It will not create new jobs and it will not benefit Cannon County in any way.

This "business" very likely will be like the one at the town bridge. They will hire people from somewhere else. Just how many Cannon County people does that one employ? This is not just a business, it is an eyesore and will add to problems at a dangerous intersection. People have been killed there. And when workers who must travel out of the county to work leave before daylight, the fog is so thick there one cannot see thru it safely. Now we will have limestone dust to contend with as well.

ftenpenny is spot on. it's not about jobs or new business.. It's about keeping ugly business out of sight! C'mon man! another eyesore in what M'Boro would call "The Gateway".....to Woodbury! Gimme a break! Correct zoning issues, and keep the carpetbaggers at bay...at least on this one where property values are at stake!

Who owns the property where the quarry will be located?
How much will they be making for each ton sent out the gate?
Shouldn't a property owner be able to lease his/her land for a money making operation if all permits and guidelines are approved and met?
Isn't this the American way of life?
The owner of the land leased to Vulcan is making money from that operation as is the owner of the land where the quarry operates across from the Arts Center. Is anyone getting up a petition to have these owners cancel their leases?

MMW: The difference is that this proposed quarry will be in the middle of two subdivisions! If you think it is such a good deal, why not invite them to set up in YOUR front yard!

choateo, don't read into my questions something that is not there.
Does it make a difference if only one house (Jackie Joe's and Rachel's) or homes in two subdivisions are affected?
Point is, those who profit from these ventures should be questioned about their motives and their interest in preservation of the natural beauty of our county.

Their motive is to make money and their interest is to receive the most value from their land as is possible. As long as they adhere to the current laws and ordinances there is nothing wrong with doing so. While there are individuals and organizations who purchase land for the purpose of preserving it, most people and businesses do so as an investment. If you live in a home in Cannon County, the "natural beauty" of the land it is on is not what it was before the structure was built.

what a person does with their own property is their own business and unfortunately a quarry is a here and gone business and not one that is sustainable long-term

dont like it then too bad go cry to mama

tennpenny is right about cannon needing zoning it is only a matter of time before soemone from murfreesboro sets up a gay bookstore or strip club and cannon will have to take the business inbecuase of no zoning

who wants a gay bar or sex shop next door to their kids? not me

next time you are wondering why businesses dont locate here, stop talking and just listen for awhile and i believe you will see the light.

we dont have the infrastructure to support most business entities. we have a wonderfull water supply and any company who has that need would have a negative effect to our beauitful natural resorces even if they comply with all the rules and laws.

then i hear comments like 'we need a wal-mart' , i dont know how to respond except to hope these people stay on the porch while decisions are being made.

we needed building codes and zoning years ago and the longer we wait the worst it will get. we also need to realize we may be a bedroom community and make efforts to capitalize on and process the ability to manage this assett. (which would begin with building codes and zoning).

If you want zoning laws, I suggest you talk to your County Commissioners and County Executive and have them get with the Planning Commissioners and propose something.

We can all agree we need them, but until you convince the people who make the laws for the county then it is a waste of time to even think about them.

As I have stated before, it took 16 tries just to get a budget approved over a six month window. What do you think it will take if they actually sat down and tried to establish zoning laws?

Especially when the statement has been made that "we don't want someone telling us how to build our buildings in Cannon County".

And what will hamper the process even more is the fact they only meet four times a year unless a "special meeting" is called?

Does anyone besides me think that is a ridiculous way to govern?

The longer we wait to work on the need for zoning laws, the more chance we take on more quarries and other businesses coming in and setting up shop that could truly harm our community.

can tell yall now from past experience- that dog wont hunt. might as well go to state level with your efforts. "anything new or different cant be good."

been several years since i built a house but at that time all that was required was a septic and electrical inspection and if you pay for the permit they might not even come out for visual inspection.

so if advice is what we are handing out, here is mine- if you buy a home or any structure in Cannon County you better inspect it from top to bottom and when you are done check it again.
