A Woodbury couple was recently arrested for allegedly stealing food items from a local grocery store.

Charged with taking a ham and two packs of cheese from Osborne’s Bi-Rite are Bethany H. Tate (aka Beth Elrod) and Courtne G. Elrod, both of 106 West Water St.

Warrants allege that Courtne Elrod distracted employees at the store while Beth Elrod took the items. They both left the store without paying.

When confronted at their home by law enforcement, Beth Elrod reluctantly gave the stolen good to officers. She cited “financial strain” as the reason for taking the items.

Both suspects were charged with theft under $500 by Woodbury Patrolman John Fesmire. Bond for each was set at $500. Initial court date is March 29.

These individuals did not have enough money to feed themselves, how are they going to afford these charges? Does anybody else see a problem here? I thought we had a food bank. Does anyone else feel like they should take food to 106 Water St.? Maybe a loaf of bread or ham or cheese? They weren't stealing beer or cigarettes.

If they were really hungry this is sad. They should have went to family or friends instead of stealing though.

Some people no matter the circumstance feel ashamed to ask for help. I have been in situations such as this whether money or food or something else, embarrassment and shame prevent you from asking for help. I thank God I did not have to go to extreme's of stealing food, but whether it is food or not stealing is stealing, and unfortunately even with the economy starting to strengthen (as they say) we still have issues such as this.

They probably didn't ask for help because if they did it would be all over town before they even got out back home.

Both of these people come from very good families, families that over the years have helped them many times over. Some people don't want help, some people need attention, they are not lacking for food or help, they have a PROBLEM. Unfortunately not every in this world is honest, hard working and or on the up and up. Life lesson learned the hard way there are some people no matter how much help they are given, things won't change until they want them to and some people chose to steal for the thrill not out of need. This is not their 1st, 2nd or even 3rd rodeo everyone is pursumed innocent until proven guilty by the courts but if you get accused over and over that should be a warning not to be as tender hearted and/or trusting as our town is. There are some people out there that their goal in life is to take advantage of as many people as they possibly can.

Dear fabfive...do I feel like I should take food to that address? NO! As a previous employer of one the above mentioned, I can honestly say that one of the individuals do not want to do any better for their self. Always had reasons not to come to work, or leave work early, or just not show up at all. I am a firm believer that before you can expect someone to help you you should try to help yourself.

I've know Beth for a long time and was completely surprized when I read this story. If she's fallen this far this fast I really hope she gets the help she needs. If you type her husband's name into the search on this website you see him listed in a couple other articles. It's easy to see who the negative influence is in the group.

Apparently the young man has had numerous brushes with the law and the legal system is failing to protect the innocent as usual. Who has to die before the judges get serious with serial offenders?

I think it is sad that people judge people when we do not have any clue what they are going through. Say it is that they wanted attention.. or that they did not want to ask for help for fear it would get around the county.. We are not to judge. Regardless of how many time he/she has been in trouble. Look at what this world has come to. They were obviously HUNGRY! Praying for this couple!

To all of the ABOVE: I have known these 2ppl personally 4many many yrs, say since Kindegaten & UH, NO! They weren't THAT HUNGRY! They were doing just as what sm1 above said, "FEEDING THEIR HABIT!" One of these individuals has been a kleptomaniac 4yrs & HAS AMPLE OPPORTUNITIES in life, & HAS ALWAYS been determined 2mk the POOREST of CHOICES! It's BEYOND PATHETIC & I hv 0SYMPATHY 4either of them! Their families & closest of friends hv TRIED so HARD 2B there 4them & support them mentally & physically, & THEY hv md the decision 2turn away from those good, decent friends & family! So, now they've made their bed, & I guess they'll have 2lie in it, until they can DECIDE it's time 2turn their lives around! This is NOT judging any1! This is just stating the COLD HARD FACTS about them! Who I DO FEEL SORRY 4here R Beth's children... THAT is WHO is SUFFERING right now, & I sincerely HOPE & PRAY that her family has them in their custody right now, b/c GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT will happen 2them, otherwise!
