Man Jailed For Threatening Witness In Court Case

A local man’s alleged attempt to keep a witness out of court have landed him in hot water. John Daniel McPeak, age 24 of S. McCrary Street, was arrested by Cannon County Sheriff’s Detective Charlie Wilder after he allegedly drove by the home of a State’s witness in his Circuit Court case and threatened to harm her if she appeared in Court.

After receiving word of this, Wilder obtained an arrest warrant for coercion of a witness and quickly apprehended McPeak.

McPeak was indicted by the September, 2009 term of the Cannon County Grand Jury on two counts of sale of methamphetamine and one count of maintaining a dwelling to keep, use or sell methamphetamine.

These charges were brought after he allegedly sold drugs out of his home. The drug sale case against McPeak has made its way through Circuit Court and is currently set for a jury trial on May 7th.

McPeak is currently being held at the Cannon County Jail in lieu of $100,000.00 bond and will appear before General Sessions Judge Susan Melton on April 27th.

Coercion of a witness is a class D felony which carries a maximum prison sentence of 12 years and a fine not to exceed $5,000.00. At this time, McPeak’s jury trial is still set for May 7th.
