Advancements in cancer research and cures have made great strides through recent decades but there remains a great deal of work to be accomplished in the fight against the disease.

If you want to help do something to help fight cancer, think about taking in a local basketball game this week.

Basketball teams from the six grammar schools in Cannon County are doing their part to help fight cancer through the annual Cannon County Cancer Tournament, scheduled to begin Tuesday at Woodbury Grammar School.

All six grammar school teams will participate in the annual event with games scheduled Tuesday (Dec. 7), Thursday and Saturday at Woodbury Grammar School. All proceeds from the Cannon County Cancer Tournament are donated to the American Cancer Society.

“When you put something as good as basketball with something as wonderful as the Cancer Society then it’s a win-win for everyone,” said East Side Principal Karen King, president of the Principal Study Council. “I think this event also helps make the young people aware of cancer and what it can do. More recently we have had students in our county affected by cancer so it puts a human side to it when friends are affected and so forth.”

Seeds are based on the teams’ record through the first five games. Woodland’s boys (10-0) and Auburn’s girls (11-0) are the top seeds.

Action begins when fourth-seeded Woodbury Grammar faces fifth-seeded Short Mountain at 4 p.m., followed by a first-round boys game pitting No. 4 East Side against No. 5 Woodbury Grammar at 5:15 p.m., Tuesday.

No. 3 West Side girls face No. 6 East Side at 6:30 p.m., and No. 3 West Side faces No. 6 Short Mountain in a boys first-round game at 7:45 p.m.

“This is like a mid-season tournament and the teams can kind of gauge where they are at this point,” King said. “The coaches and players always seem to enjoy the tournament and the money goes toward a good cause so this is a tournament people look forward to.”

Semifinal action takes place Thursday. Auburn and Woodland’s boys and girls receive byes and play Thursday. Championships are scheduled for Saturday at 6:30 and 7:45 p.m., respectively.

I still don't understand why the games are held at WGS and not the High School. Can someone please explain this, or why it was ever changed. It is definitely not very fair for the other schools coming to WGS to play on their home floor. I remember always looking forward to the Tournaments and being able to have a chance to play on the " High School" floor. For some of these kids they will never have that experience.

The games are played at Woodbury Grammar because the high school basketball teams have practices this week as they prepare for a key District 8-AA road game at Smith County. I agree with you BRA that it would be nice if the grammar school teams could play this tournament at the high school as it would be a nice touch for the ones who look forward to play there as early as next year; however, it would unfair to take away from the high school teams and their practices during this important time. One high school team practices at 2 PM and the other practices at 4 PM so that means the earliest games could start at the high school would be 6:30 and there is no way to play four games a session at the high school. On a positive note, the WGS gym is awesome and well-equipped to host an event such as this. Bonnie Patterson and her staff did an excellent job with the Border Wars Tournament and hosting clearly was not an advantage as Woodland's boys and Auburn's girlss won and neither WGS team was in the championship games. Best of luck to all the teams and coaches.

well, when i played basketball in the year of 1996-1997-1998, we always went to the veterans gym for practice the week of the tournament so the grammar school could play at the highschool. so stinnett, there are other places the highschool can practice so this tournament can be played there.

I know you can't please everyone but I agree with 65stang and BRA on this one it can be done and has been in the past. To be perfectly honest I liked it when they played the games on Thursday, Friday and Sat nights. And if I'm fussing anyway, it's really hard for players, parents to be at a 4pm or 5pm game, some of us do have jobs.

Does anyone know why they stopped having it at the High School? Did the High School not want it there anymore? Does the High School faculty and Basketball coaches want it back?

I also want to clarify that I am talking mainly about the County Tournament and Cancer Tournament because those are the ones that use to be played at the High School. The Cancer Tournament should be played wherever the host wants it to be played and it is a great cause. It just doesn't feel like a County tournament being played at and hosted by WGS. They should send out a survey to all the coaches, principles, and ball players asking them where they would want to play the tournaments given they had an option to play at WGS or the High School. I know what the majority would say. That is why I wrote my previous comment wanting to find out the reason it was changed. I am a coach not a parent and I have talked to other coaches and we just wanted to know.

County Tournament was something special when it was played at the High School. More fans showed up for the games and it was a really exciting atmosphere. Now it's just another grammar school game(s) that are played at WGS. There's not enough seating or parking for the Championship/awards night. And honestly, the county tournament may be the only time some of these ball players ever get to play on the high school floor. I know that the players would rather play at the high school, because I've asked them. If the coaches and players would rather play at the high school, I say why not let them? And as a fan, the high school gym is bigger, better lighted and alot more parking. Why was it moved from the high school? Does anyone know? The high school teams go to veterans gym for shooting practice, so I don't see why they couldn't hold practice there.

I do know that it was moved several seasons ago because the high school coaches at that time were not accomodating to the teams. They did not want them in their locker rooms, the high school players were eating the food in the hospitality room, etc. I would assume the high school coaches now would like to have it back at CCHS as well. Coach Rigsby wanted to move Jr. Pro to the high school and did. I also know that in the past the principals have voted on the subject and continued to vote to have it at WGS. Maybe the parents and players should voice their opinions to their principals or school board members. If enough people complain, the issue will have to come to light! I think it is funny how nobody will come out and say why it hasn't been moved back to CCHS.

Complaining to the principals and school board members do NO good at all. Only one board member and one principal has a child on the basketball teams, if it's not about money or T-Cap test their not listening. Point already proven this year with the changes made to this years season. Parents and players should not have opinions, just please forward your check directly to the school...... often and without complaint.
