The Cannon County Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at the Adams Memorial Library, in the basement meeting room.

Hal Larimer will be the quest speaker or "talker" as he prefers to put it. These is probably not a person in the Cannon County area who does not know Hal.

J.H. "Hal" Larimer came to Woodbury and Cannon County in 1940 from Alabama with his "Base Fiddle." That's a story within itself! He like the Woodbury area and stayed.

After marriage, he entered the grocery business. He then began building houses. From there he entered the funeral home business in the mid 1940's.

The story continues ... farm, cattleman, developer of Riverside Memorial Gardens, owner/partner of radio station WBFJ (later becoming WBRY), and the list goes on.

All of this and more are good stories that only Hal can tell, and he will on Nov. 9. He will share memories and reflections of Cannon County and its people.

Sandwiches and other treats we be served beginning at 6:30. The program will begin at 7.

Absolutely a great selection to have as a "talker" Should be most interesting -those Alabama stories and his early years in Woodbury.

Can another small town match this one. You drive in from the East and sit down with Bill Smith on the front porch of the Smith Funeral Home, rock for an hour or so and hear dozens of stories of the town and its people, leave and come on towards town, drive up and sit awhile with Nolan Northcutt, watching the traffic go by and hear more great stories, then on to the Woodbury Funeral Home, on the porch again, and hear Hal Larimer spin stories for another wonderful hour and then finally stop by Paul Reed's Furniture Store and join him in a rocker and be entertained again and again.

Perhaps someone will someday, do all this with a tape recorder and the young people of the town can sit back and listen to what we have had a privilege of listening to for some time and hopefully for many years to come.

May the road rise gently for all you gentlemen!

Mr. Larimer is one of the finest men I know and was gracious during the time I lost my father, mother, and recently my brother. He was operating the ambulance that picked my mother and me up at the Good Samaritan Hospital and delivered us home some 62 years ago. He is a walking history book of Cannon County. Thank you for your kind words and smile whenever I have seen you Mr. Hal.
