Let's Continue To Exercise Civility

One thing for certain, that Matt Studd sure knows how to deliver a hateful, mean spirited, and divisive speech.

As I read his comments to the gathering of the Cannon County Republicans (Cannon Courier, Oct. 19), I got to thinking; for all these years I have either been really naive or my Republican friends didn't have the heart to tell me they thought I was evil or an abomination to God.

I also got to thinking it is quite obvious that this person is not, as my grandmother use to say, "from around here" or else he would realize that this is not who Cannon Countians are.

We may have our political and philosophical differences but, for the most part, Cannon County Democrats and Republicans have lived and worked and worshiped side by side for generations and have managed to maintain a civil discourse on politics.

My hope is that during this political season we continue to be civil towards one another and to respect our right to disagree without reducing the debate to the self-righteous rhetoric spewed by Matt Studd.

Oh, and one last thought.  I didn't realize God favored Republicans over Democrats.  I'm just saying.

Good letter, Faye! A sense of humor goes a long way toward dispelling tension.

I believe this letter is right about one thing & that is that God doesn't favor one party over another. He is "not a respecter of persons", a Republican, a Democrat, nor is He even American. However, that being said, He does judge and the Bible tells us that righteousness exalts a nation. When you associate yourself with a political party you are essentially saying that you agree with what they're doing. Since in your letter you must bring up the always used (over used) mantra of the native Cannon Countian about Mr. Studd not being "from around here" so he doesn't realize who Cannon Countians are. Ok, please enlighten us as to who Cannon Countians are. Mr. Studd is saying he hopes to see the nation return to moral high ground. I would hope that this is what the majority of Cannon Countians want. But, is that what is being espoused by our state & federal Democrats? Anyone answering honestly would have to say no. Is the Cannon County Democrat truly being represented at the state & federal levels? I hope not, b/c what they are standing for at present is not what I have ever perceived the people of Cannon County to be. Mr. Studd has every right to voice his opinion the same as you on here calling him hateful, mean spirited, devisive, & self righteous.

Nicely said, contrast the three letters with Studd's invectives and one sees civility being maintained in the face of great provocation.

Thank you, Mrs Northcutt-Knox, Mr Willians and Mrs Patrick-- I would think for the most part, Cannon Countians welcome this return to civility.

dailyreader:

You need to voice your opinion in the DNJ since you live in Murfreesboro and cannot vote in Cannon County and do not pay taxes here.

You are nothing more than an instigator who likes to start trouble. Worry about Rutherford county and leave Cannon to the people who have a vested interest here.
