Wednesday, June 24, 2015 2:26 pm By CAROL GUNTER Hope all the dads out there had a great Father's Day and were able to just sit back and relax and be waited on and given cards and presents since it was their big day. They deserve a day off, too, to enjoy. The official day of summer also was on June 21st. It's been feeling like summer before it got here to some of us. Enjoying a visit with Chloe Evelyn Bogle on Tuesday as his sister Irene Hibdon from Michigan was there and has been staying with Chloe Evelyn for several days. Heather and the girls and also Cody and his family spending some time with Chloe Evelyn, also. Chloe Evelyn telling me about a surprise birthday party for Mrs. Macon Wade that was held at the Short Mountain Church of God on Saturday, June 13th. Mrs. Macon was totally surprised but loved every moment of it. She is 80 years old now. The fellowship hall was filled to capacity with so many people there to congratulate her on her birthday. An abundance of food for everyone to enjoy. I, too, wish you a happy birthday Mrs. Macon. You are such a beautiful person. Left out a birthday for June: Jeff Brown 11th. Condolences to the family of Trena Curtis age "52". She passed away at her home on Thursday June 11th. Trena had been battling cancer for a long time. We know she is now in the presence of Jesus and is well. Please be praying for the Curtis family as they are dealing with the loss of this dear loved one who meant so much to so many. Got to talk with Bernie Braswell at the store and also Ronald Lawson this week. They were both doing pretty good. Well, American Pharaoh won the Triple Crown in horse racing. It's been a dry spell since 1978 when Affirmed won the Triple Crown some 37 years ago. In 1973, Secretariat won the Triple Crown by beating the rest of the horses in the field by over 33 lengths. What a feat and what a horse as no other horse has ever won by that margin of victory. The Beetles are back and I'm not talking about those rock and roll sensations the "Beatles" from England. These beetles with wings come in droves it seems to devour crape myrtles, rose bushes and the maroon leaved cannas around our house. Saw them this week an the hydrangeas also. Sevin dust always seems to help out in getting rid of them. What benefit these beetles are, I don't know. I think they are just here to annoy us anyway they possibly can. Would like to know did someone bring them over here from another country and also wondering just how long they've been coming around? They are really disgusting little menaces to me. They're called Japanese beetles -- so they are probably an import from Japan, right? (That's the only logical explanation I can come up with) and I guess it's way too late to export them back to where they came from. Last report on these little aliens was they were quarantined on a carnival cruise ship as a lot of people were sick. This was the cruise line that Kathie Lee Gifford used to promote on TV years ago. What's puzzling about this is some unidentified source relating to me that maybe the "little green men" were behind the outbreak of the illness as they were really living it up on the ship and weren't ready to dock in any port. Someone that would be in the know about this would be Clyde I guess as he keeps up with their whereabouts. One problem with this, Clyde's not answering his phone. Maybe there's some truth about this story after-all. At Smithville on Monday and went by DeKalb market and saw our girls Deb and Skeeter -- Spiker not there at the time. They are all doing well. Please keep in prayer: Kathy Martin, Denise Stanton, Carlon and Mai Nell Melton (Carlon had a fall on Saturday evening and cut his head. He is doing some better.) and Edith Miller.
