Woodbury native Billy R. Smith, Dean of the College of Biblical Studies at Freed-Hardeman University, is pictured with 2011 CCHS graduates Casey Nash and Mary Harris, who have just completed their junior year at FHU. Nash has been awarded the Cannon County Churches of Christ Bible Scholarship for 2014-15. He will graduate in May of 2015 with a B.S. degree in Bible and Ministry.

“We are extremely proud of Casey and his first three years here,” Dr. Smith stated in announcing the award. “He is a young man of character, ability, and servant leadership with a bright future in ministry. Along with his academic schedule, Casey works with the Austin Chapel congregation in Henderson County, and he will spend the summer in a ministry internship in Anderson, South Carolina.” Casey is the son of Jerry and Penny Nash of Short Mountain.

“We are also very proud of Mary, an outstanding young lady majoring in accounting. She has already been employed by the Steele, Martin, and Jones accounting firm of Jackson. With her accelerated program, she will graduate with honors in December, earning both BBA and MBA degrees.” Dr. Smith smiles as he adds, “She has also been a wonderful addition to our campus beautification project.”

Mary is the daughter of Joe and Vicki Harris of the Smith Grove congregation and community.

Herb Alsup and members of the Woodbury congregation established the Cannon Churches of Christ Bible Scholarship in 1997. Due to the generosity of donors from throughout the county, the scholarship has grown to become the largest endowed Bible award at Freed-Hardeman and is presented annually to young men from Woodbury and Cannon County who major in Bible. Dr. Smith concluded, “I cannot begin to express my love and gratitude for everyone who makes this scholarship possible.”
