2011 4-H Bread Baking Contest “Everybody here tonight is a winner,” stated Extension Agent Heath Nokes at the Cannon County 4-H Bread Baking Contest held Tuesday, May 17, at Auburn School. “As participants, you have learned important skills such as setting goals, following directions, and cooking healthy foods,” he added. Perhaps the luckiest two fellows present were judges Jared Franklin and Ed Motlow sampling the fresh baked cookies, breads and muffins. “We like to eat,” laughed Ed. It was he and Jared’s responsibility to determine the best entries based on appearance, shape, flavor and creativity. Although there was less county-wide participation, approximately 600 youth entered individual school baking competitions. Rachel Hale of Auburn School said that she often baked chocolate chip cookies at home and shared a copy of her recipe published in the Woodbury Nursing Center Cookbook. Garrett Bacon from West Side School flashed a smile as he reported his biscuit recipe was a “family secret.” Every contestant received a 4-H yo-yo with cookie jars, oven mittens and ice cream scoops going to first, second and third place winners. This was the last county-wide 4-H contest for 2010-1011 school year. (DONNA NICHOLS story and photos)4 images / created on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 3:31 pm

2011 Celebration Of Spring It was a beautiful spring day for the 300 people who attended the third annual Celebration of Spring at Edgar Evins State Park on Center Hill Lake, near Smithville. This free event for families and individuals was hosted on April 9th by the Friends of Edgar Evins State Park and park employees. Features included sack and three-legged races, pontoon boat rides, a crafts workshop, face painting, snake show, wildflower, birds, and butterflies nature walks, and a family friendly Easter Egg Hike led by the Murfreesboro Chapter of Tennessee Trails Association. One of the highlights of the day was the performance of several Cannon County ballerinas from the Cannon Arts Dance Studio in Woodbury, owned and operated by Lori Christensen. Mrs. Christensen, fondly known around Cannon County as "Ms. California," dressed as Mother Nature and acted as the emcee for the diminutive dancers. She reports. "We had a wonderful time and I think its safe to say that the dance studio would love to do this again next year." So mark your calendars now for the 2nd Saturday in April next year. 2011 West Side Sports Banquet West Side basketball players and cheerleaders were honored at a sports banquet held Monday, April 18, at West Side School. Cheerleaders were presented with a trophy, while each basketball player was presented a plaque with an action photo. 8th grade basketball players also received framed jerseys with autographs from their teammates. A big "Thank You" to all the athletes for a great year, and a special thank you to the 8th graders. We will miss your dedication and leadership next year. Best wishes as you go on to CCHS! After being honored at the West Side Sports Banquet on Monday, April 18, the athletes challenged their parents to a friendly game of basketball. The parents took the challenge with the daughters competing against the moms and the sons competing against the dads. What started out as friendly competition soon turned into very competitive games! In the guys game, the competition was fierce, but the dads came up winners with a score of 63-56. In the girls game, the the girls won with the score of 60-58, but the moms put up a good fight (with a little help from the scorekeeper!) 2011 World Thinking Day World Thinking Day was held by Service Unit 158 on March 12 at the Cannon County Community Center Gym. Countries represented were Ireland, Greece, Germany, Egypt, Mexico, Japan, and 1960's USA. Each troop worked hard to learn about the culture of the country they represented the day of the event. A huge thank you goes to the merchants in Cannon County that allow Girl Scouts to set up booths to sell cookies. Without this opportunity special programs, such as World Thinking Day, would not be possible. This year Piggly Wiggly, Dollar Market, Ace Hardware, First Bank, Regions, Woodbury Farmers Coop, Parsley's Market, First Stop Market, Highway 53 Market, Joe's Place, Osborne's Market, and First National Bank partnered with us. Our 7 troops gave the donated 81 boxes for Gift of Caring to the Cannon County Food Bank. We as a service unit we earned a total of $3,702.60 for our Girls Scout Troops. Woodbury Welcomes Marine Home A large crowd of Cannon County citizens converged along Main Street in front of the courthouse Saturday afternoon to welcome home Marine Corps LCpl. Phillip M. Rhyne. LCpl. Rhyne, the son of Teresa and James E. Danford of Woodbury, has been serving his country in Afghanistan for the last year. He arrived in Nashville from Camp Lejeune (N.C.) Saturday and was escorted to Woodbury by the Patriot Guard Riders, a diverse group of motorcycle riders from across the nation. "This is really amazing," LCpl. Rhyne said of the welcome home. "I really did not expect it. It seems like half of Woodbury is here." He added while it was difficult being away from home for a year, the gifts and care package sent by family and friends made the experience easier. LCpl. Rhyne said he was "glad to be home" and that sentiment was shared by a member of the crowd who was there to greet him as she said, "I don't know you, but I just want to give you a hug."32 images / created on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 5:26 pm
