Area residents are invited to share their views to create a common vision for the future of Cannon County. The Cannon County Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with governments of Auburntown, Woodbury and Cannon County, will hold a special meeting this Saturday. The meeting will be at the Lions Memorial Building at the intersection of Adams and Lehman Streets. Breakfast will be provided starting at 8:00 a.m., with the meeting beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Cannon County, Woodbury and Auburntown have been members of the Three-Star Program for three years. The Tennessee Department Economic and Community Development developed the program to assist counties and communities with their planning and recognize them for their work.

The Cannon County Chamber of Commerce works with the county and town governments to qualify for Three-Star. The manpower requirements for this task have been challenging. After discussions with state officials, the decision was reached to withdraw from Three Star for one year and spend that time expanding local outreach.

Part of the qualifying process for Three-Star includes a five-year plan and a leadership class. Earlier this week, the Leadership Cannon class held its first meeting for 2009-2010. With thanks in part to Cannon County Schools, this should one of the largest classes yet. It is not too late to become part of this group. All that is required is a commitment of time.

The five-year plan for the county will include input from business, education, government, artists, industry, children, seniors, homeowners, renters, commuters and anyone who wants to contribute. As persons gather this Saturday, the group will be forming a vision of what they want Cannon County to be.

In addition to the issues contained in the five-year plan, those present will also address the needs and concerns of our school system and what the community can do to increase graduation rates at Cannon County High School. Cannon County was cited earlier this year as one of ten school systems in the state with a low graduation level.
