September is an exciting month for the library with the return of Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers followed by International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers return to the library for a third sold out concert (that's pirate talk for anyone can come and it's free to the public). The Blue Buccaneers and their fearless leader, Tom Mason, always provide toe-tapping music interlaced with pirate humor and audience participation (that's pirate talk for you can sing along). Their concerts are always full of surprises and fun. Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 17, 2016, at 1:00 pm and don't miss Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers at the library.

Tom and his merry band will also prepare you for Talk Like a Pirate Day the following Monday, September 19. This "holiday" was recently invented by two guys and then brought to the international stage by Dave Barry, the Pulitzer Prize winning humor columnist. Yes, this is all true. From the web page of the originators,, here are some handy pirate phrases to practice and then use on Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers or your friends and fellow pirates. If more advanced pirate speak is for you, visit the web page for even more interesting lingo.

Ahoy! - "Hello!"
Avast! - Stop and give attention. It can be used in a sense of surprise, "Whoa! Get a load of that!" which today makes it more of a "Check it out" or "No way!"
Aye! - "Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did."
Aye aye! - "I'll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over."

Arrr! - This one is often confused with arrrgh, which is of course the sound you make when you sit on a belaying pin. "Arrr!" can mean, variously, "yes," "I agree," "I'm happy," "My team is going to win it all," and "That was a clever remark you or I just made." And those are just a few of the myriad possibilities of Arrr!

Shiver me timbers, Matey (you'll have to look up the translation on the talklikeapirate web page) and be sure to come to the library in full pirate gear for a great time. Saturday, September 17, 1:00 pm. Arrrr!!!!
