Lions Sweep Clarkrange

Cannon County’s baseball team enjoyed a doubleheader sweep against visiting Clarkrange Saturday (April 28) winning 6-5 and 14-4.

Brent Duggin reached second with none out and was bunted to third by brother Brian Duggin before Nick Vasser laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to secure the victory in game one.

Austin Brown continued his hot streak, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Chase Gunter pitched five strong innings and Justin Tobin came on to pitch two innings of no-hit baseball to earn the win.

The Lions broke out the bats - and brooms- to complete the sweep in the nightcap. Vasser had another strong peformance on the mound, scattering five hits over five innings to earn the win. Vasser was also 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI in the 14-4 win.

Brown kept his hot bat sizzling with a 3-for-3 effort that included a double, two runs scored and one RBI from the leadoff position. The junior shortstop is hitting .481 during his current nine-game hitting streak.

Dalton Bell, Brian Duggin, Jarrett Melton, Nathan McGuire and Chase Gunter also had run-producing hits in the victory.

Earlier in the week the Lions suffered a 7-1 setback against Smith County Monday, and fell 19-3 Tuesday.

Brown, Brent Duggin and Jackson Mason had hits in the Monday game, while Brown, Brent Duggin, Brian Duggin and Trent Bragg had base knocks in the Tuesday game against Smith County.

The Lions conclude the regular season with games against DeKalb County in  Woodbury Monday and in Smithville Tuesday. Both games are set for 5 p.m.

They will begin play in the District 8-AA Tournament against York Thursday. Time and location for the York game was not determined at presstime.
