MURFREESBORO — First-year coach Joel Schrenk's Cannon County football team notched its third win of the season here Friday night, and in the process recorded their first back-to-back victory.

Following it stunning win over eighth-ranked York a week ago, the Lions traveled to Middle Tennessee Christian School in Murfreesboro Friday night hoping that the momentum from the York win would carry over into the game against the Cougars.

The Lions were able to score early on the arm of QB Lee Cooper in the 26-6 win, improving the Lions record to 3-3 for the season.

Cannon’s defense set the tone for the game when they blocked a field goal attempt by MTCS.

The Lions finally moved the ball with Daniel Woodin ripping through the line for a 55-yard touchdown run, but a flag nullified the play. The Lions regrouped and moved the ball down the field with a 45-yard Cooper to Andy Agee pass.

Daniel Woodin finished the drive with a 1-yard plunge. The kick failed making the score 6-0.

The Cougars were able to move the ball with a strong running game, leading to a 1-yard touchdown run. Daniel Woodin blocked the extra point tying the score at 6-6.

Daniel Woodin took the Cougar kickoff giving the Lions good field position. The Lions steadily moved the ball down the field completing the drive to a Cooper to Andrew Woodin touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion was completed to a diving Heath Simons, putting the Lions up 14-6

The Lions had one more chance to score at the end of the quarter, but a 50-yard touchdown pass from Cooper to Agee was called back on a penalty. The first half ended with the Lions leading 14-6.

The second half saw MTSC going to the air. A much-improved Lion secondary shut down the passing game. Daniel Woodin intercepted a Cougar pass, and after his 50-yard return, the Lions had the ball at MTSC’s 17 yard line. Gabriel Walkup finished the short drive with a 5-yard TD run, putting the Lions ahead 20-6.

The teams exchanged possessions for the remainder of the game with neither team able to move the ball. The Lions final drive of the game ended with a Cooper 41-yard run into the end zone making the final score 26-6.

The Lions will host Livingston next week in a key district game. This will also be Cannon County High School’s Homecoming game with the Homecoming activities starting at 6:30.
