Lions Complete Spring Practice On High Note

Fullback B.J. Daniel, 44, powers around the end as Waylon Sedtal, 84, provides a block.
Cannon County started to develop its identity through spring practice and revealed in a 28-21 win against Red Boiling Springs to cap drills under first-year head coach Brent Bush.

The Lions demonstrated hard-hitting and offensive execution throughout the scrimmage, putting more emphasis on its ground game while utilizing the strong arm of rising junior quarterback Ryan Jordan the defense.

Jordan threw two touchdown passes to Justin Tobin and another to Waylon Sedtal to key the offense; however, a consistent ground game that featured Hawk Love and B.J. Daniel kept the defense honest.

“I was proud of the way the players competed and progressed during our spring practice,” Bush said. “They have worked hard as we have installed new things so it was great to see them have some success at the end in the scrimmage. I thought all of our young men worked hard and improved and that’s the main thing we have to continue to do.”

Cannon County returns several players who saw action as youngsters in 2011. Bush is hoping that experience will pay off in the upcoming season.

It is imperative that players have a good summer conditioning program and continue to work on learning new schemes on offense and defense.

“We will employ some new things on both sides of the ball so it is important that our players realize the importance of learning and working,” Bush said. “That has to continue into the summer and then carry it into the preseason. I do believe we have made progress this spring but if we do not build off of that and continue to improve then we will let ourselves down.”

The Lions have several key players returning on both sides of the ball and players believe experience gained will pay off.

“We are doing new things but we have been in games and know what it takes to compete at this level,” Tobin said. “We have to keep working hard this summer and have a good preseason.”

Players will go through individual conditioning this summer in preparation for preseason in August.
