The opening drive of West Creek ended with a fumble that was recovered by Cannon at their own 44-yard line. A handoff to Daniel Woodin ended with a 15 yard gain, followed by a 14 yard scramble by QB Lee Cooper. A penalty put the ball on the West Creek 47-yard line, but a 45-yard completion from Cooper to Bryant “Bubba” Hare put the ball on the Coyote 2-yard line. The drive ended with a tipped pass that was intercepted at the 2-yard line by West Creek.
The defense, having much to prove after giving up 47 points last week, tackled the Coyote running back in the end zone for a safety, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead. The Lion offense took possession at the Cannon 42-yard line after the free kick by West Creek. The offensive unit moved the ball with the offensive line providing protection for Cooper and opening holes for the running game. With the ball on the Coyote 7-yard line, Cooper dropped back and hit Andy Agee for a 7-yard touchdown pass. With Cooper’s successful two-point conversion, the Lions took a 10-0 lead.
West Creek started their drive after the kickoff at the 35-yard line. The Coyotes moved the ball into Lion territory, but Cannon’s defense put pressure on the quarterback and with a QB sack by Tyler Jacobs, West Creek was forced to punt. The Lions fumbled the punt allowing the Coyotes to recover the ball. The Cannon defense was up to the challenge as they put pressure on the QB leading to incomplete passes and shutting down the running game. A failed fourth and long attempt gave the Lions possession at their 30-yard line.
Cannon Count moved the ball downfield with Cooper running and throwing the ball. The drive ended with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Brandon James and with another Cooper run for the two-point conversion, the Lions took an 18-0 lead with 11:24 remaining in the second quarter.
The Lion defense made it difficult for the Coyotes to get anything going on offense. Cesar Wilson and Jacobs made defensive plays that led to West Creek losing the ball on downs.
Cannon County’s offense rolled up more yards as the second quarter came to an end scoring on a pass from Cooper to Gabriel Walkup for 16 yards, and another touchdown pass to Agee for 47 yards, giving Cooper a total of 176 passing yards for the first half. The Lions went into the half with a 31-0 lead.
The second half saw the Lions go to the running game with D. Woodin carrying most of the load. Neither team was able to move the ball into scoring postition until West Creek drove deep into Cannon territory. With the ball at the 15-yard line and time running out in the third quarter, the Coyote QB fired a ball to the corner of the end zone where it was intercepted by D.Woodin.
Woodin followed up his interception on the second play of the fourth quarter with a 76-yard touchdown run. West Creek was able to get the ball into the Cannon end zone late in the fourth quarter making the final score 37-7.
After the game, QB Cooper praised the offensive line and his receivers for making “great catches.” Walkup and Agee stated, “the team played with more aggression this week and the defensive line was unstoppable.” Wilson added, “we have a good defense, but we’re still working. We need to forget about tonight’s win and get ready for next week.” “We have a lot to work on, but we will get there.”
Coach Joel Schrenk praised his players for playing hard. “We’ll always play hard. The boys never give up. I challenged the offense to run the ball in the second half and they answered with a time-consuming drive. They got it done and this was a good win for us.”
